Wanted natural colored cotton seed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

The wife and me have been gathering her cotton crop yesterday and today. She currently has green, brown and rust cotton that in naturally colored. She would like to find some blue cotton seed that has not been crossed and also some Egyptian and Sea island cotton seed. If you have any she doesn't have or know of somewhere she could get some she would be glad to send you some of my money in exchange. She only had a small hand ful of each of the green, brown and rust last spring and it will take her another couple of years before she will have enough seed to plant what she is planning to grow. After that she will have extra seed. Well if every thing goes as planned. She has her cotton spaced a 1/4 mile apart with trees between each field to keep them from crossing and its pesticide and herbicide free she plans to use them to spin and weave. ( If you see me in a couple of years and I am wearing some really ugly cloths don't laugh) Thanks David and Judy

David, where did she get her original seed? I have been looking for colored cotton in small qty. I am in NC. Thanks Debbie

To answer where the wife found the first seed. She found a friend that had just a hand full of each that she had kept vivable by planting a few plants of one color each year and alternating colors from year to year so she would have fresh seed. We had enough area to keep the plots of cotton far enough apart so the colors will not mix. The friend is happy to be able to get seed from my wife when she decides to plant. David

I am intriqued by the variety of colors that cotton comes in. I had no idea. I had only thought there was one color. If your wife decides she would like to share some of the seed with us, I would love to have some (I am willing to pay for it, of course.) I wonder if it would be worth having several of us on this forum grow the seed, each of us growing a separate color and then all of us sharing the colors raised by each other. That would help those of us that don't have land available which is spaced far enough apart to not mix the colors. Okay, okay, I'm just dreaming, but the thought intriques me.
