How do you keep winter squash? They don't need to be refridgerated, do they?

No -- the best place I've found is in the basement in baskets, somewhere cool and dry, and preferably dark, where they won't freeze.

You can cook them and then scrape out the pulp and freeze it -- when warmed it tastes just like it just came from the oven.

On my way to work this morning, the local radio station had a couple of men talking about squash and how to store and cook it. I was amazed that men could know so much about squash! No offense to the wise men of this forum! One neat way of cooking acorn squash was to slice it into 1 inch rings and bake. This is a neat way to get kids to eat squash. On storing them, they suggested hanging them in the basement or root cellar in a mesh bag of some sort. Seems the air circulating around them keep them from rotting.

We have an unused bedroom upstairs that we can close off and it stays quite cool during the winter. Probably 60 degrees at the most. It's perfect for winter squash. Apples too.
