Coughing Pig - Remedy?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Okay .. just a short question I hope someone can help me with. At least one of our new pigs has a cough. Mainly in the morning and/or evening - anyone know of something I can give in the water/feed to help prevent/cure this? Points to note are: pig weighs approx. 40lbs, was in slotted floor confinement and is now on ground with a shed and good dry bedding (breaking up the garden for us), and I haven't given them anything since we got them Saturday.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

It could be from the dust in the dirt. They weren't used to dust because they were on a slatted floor.

" A dry cough might just be the first sign of worms, especially in piglets, but it might also be the first signs of more sinister conditions. Your pig should have a glossy coat, be alert and especially in the case of piglets, be with the others. Be aware of a pig who is shunned by the others in the litter.. he or she might be unwell. If you have any doubts take a vet "

Thanks to you all for your input! As always, I can always count on the Countryside Forum for good feedback.

Turns out that the pigs had to get used to the dirt and there was probably a little dust in the hay bedding I used. Went out early this morning and hung around the pen for a while and there wasn't any coughing and the pigs were active and happy (not exactly happy to see me *yet* but active). Thanks again for all the help!

Unexplained coughing can be a sign of bordatella infection ( also called bullnose in pigs). Any pig owner buying stock should vaccinate for this as it is quite widespread.
