water filter to take iron out of water

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Can anyone tell me about a water filter that is not too expensive that filters iron out of water? Our sinks and bathtub are being stained orange and even some of our clothes in the washing machine. Your help is most appreciated! Thank you.

We used to have that problem and used the filters from Sears. All our porcelain stayed white with them. They had to be maintained on a very regular basis but it was worth it. I think the new ones no longer require as much. Good Luck!

Get your water tested. Sears iron filters have (at used to have) a fixed capacity of how much iron it could remove. Sears would not work for me (in the 1970's) because I had too much iron in my water.

Thank you both so much for your responses. I will be going to Sears just as soon as I can get off island (we have to take a ferry to get to the mainland). Do you know at what percent the iron has to be in the water before the filters won't work? I can't believe how incredible it is to have a whole group of friends out there at Countryside to ask advice from! Wonderful! Robyn
