Hydraulic Jack

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have 2 hydraulic jacks that I stored in a shed. The roof leaked and the jacks got wet. Now, when I insert the handle and try to use them, they are completely frozen. Does anyone know a simply cure that a person who is not at all mechanically inclined could use. Thanks in advance. Eagle

drain the oil, see if it goes down then. You might have to push with your hand. If not,, soak the cylinder with WD40, or other rust getter. If it still doesnt go down with your help. Smack the top of the cylinder with a hammer, to break the rust. The re soak. If it hasnt been there too long,, it should take this much. Ive only seen 1 jack that got shot because of rust. After it breaks loose,, refill with new oil (hydralic jack oil) , then make sure you extend it all the way,, a couple of times, to break any rust that remains.

Was something wrong with the replys to an identical post on September 23, 2001, still on the active page display?

To reask a question might indicate the past answers might not have done the trick and the asker is still interested in more information. DG

Is the jacks stuck up or down?

well eagle,

At least in this post you are not thinking about screwing Wal-Mart because YOU ruined your jacks. Congrats on locating a little bit of conscience.

You might try automatic teansmission fluid, to penetrate the rust. This might work, might not. Work the handle if possible to put pressure on the rusted part. An occasional tap with a hammer on the cyl end (the jacking surface) might help to free things up.

If none of this works you might consider using them for boat anchors.

CJ & DG, I guess I unintentionally posted twice about the jacks. I probably got some good answers on the first post (in which I mentioned Walmart) but don't know how to get to them now, guess they're in Archives somewhere. (my fault, sorry) Mel: down, won't go up.. I'm going to try all the suggestions on this one (except he boat ancors, I don't have a boat)and try to find the first one. If I have any luck, I'll make another post. If not, I'll just go buy another jack. Thanks for all the replys. Eagle
