Leaky Roof

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I almost categorized this under water! The recent heavy rains have brought to my attention that I have a hole in my roof over a small attic area. It goes trough the wood and shingles. It appears some of the sections of roof are older than others, this being an older one. Now, I am by myself, fairly inexperienced (but good at following directions and doing 'stuff') and also broke with winter on the horizon. Any suggestions for decent fixes that I can do and that are fairly inexpensive? What about cutting the section out and putting in a skylightLOL???

Can you pinpoint the area of the leak? Sometimes they are a good distance from where the leak actually shows up. Are they asphalt or wood shingles? How large of an area are you talking about?

There is a product out which is called Snow Roof, I believe. There are several diff brands, you need to get the better grade and it can be rolled on with a roller and it does a good job in sealing leaks. If you can find where it is leaking use the black tar first to seal major holes and then paint with the snow roof. I painted a small house roof with it and it has lasted 4 years without anymore leaks. Bill

Bill Porter,

I am considering buying snow roof. I have a few questions.

Are you saying there are different grades of Snow Roof?

Do you paint it on with a brush?

Is it white? Is it thick? Is it rubbery?

Rick, I have found some cheap brands that they pass off as snow roof but use that brand name and you will be alright. It is white, somewhat thick and I guess it is rubbery but easy to put on with a roller. I have used a brush for places I couldn't get to with a roller but a cheap roller and long handle for the roller body will let you stand up and pour out part of a can and then spread it. I buy the cheap rollers and then just throw them away. I have used it off and on for 7 or 8 years and it has never let me down. Bill
