Actually years back my first acquaintance to goats was through the MEN and an article about pygmy's beging the perfect small meat animal for the homestead, now the nigerians are the perfect homestead milk animal :) Pretty small appetites at these homesteads! Vicki

From what I remember reading the pgmy and nigerian were developed for africa as they dont need much food and produce well.nigerians will give you a 1/2 gallon of milf a day [ with good blood lines] and both nigerians and pygmys work well for meat[ pgmys were bred just for producing meat if I remember right]and the size is perfect for a meal or two, and since refrigeration is a concern in africa these animals work great there. With the pgmys here they started to bred to make them pets and now I have heard that pgmys have trouble birthing but have no first hand knowlege just repeating what ive heard.nigerians on the other hand produce twins and 3 and 4 are common so this might be a better breed to consider.
