Anyone using perennial peanut for pasture forage or hay?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Among the myriad other things I need to do on the place when we move in is to improve the pasture condition. I've been spending some time on the Univ. of FL Cooperative Extension Service website to see what my possible options are for a good grass/legume mix in my sandy, well drained North Florida soil. So far it's looking like perennial peanuts are going to be the way to go for a perennial legume. Forage quality is supposed to be pretty comparable to alfalfa (which does poorly here), it grows well over the summer, and it's supposed to be drought resistant. Are there any Deep South Countryside readers using perennial peanuts in their pastures and if so what do you think so far?

I grow Perennial Peanut Hay, but don't have any cattle. I understand that Arbrook PPH grown with Bahia is being used secessfully in Alabama. You might want to contact Kevin Campbell (e-mail: kcampbell@uga.edu). Kevin is with the Georgia Extension Service just to the north of you in Quitman, Ga. (Brooks County) and is a hay and forage specialist. We have discussed what was being done with mixed PPH/grass forage and he should be able to provide the information you're after.
