BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Discovery Channel Store Inc. is recalling 16,000 glass and metal oil-burning lamps be- cause they can shatter when lit, posing a fire hazard. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the company had received four reports of the lamps shattering, caus- ing minor property damage but no injuries. The recalled lamps came in two shapes -- 16-by-7-inches rectangular and 7.5-inch square -- with a top piece of the rectan- gular lamp opening for five wicks and the square lamp opening for one. The lamps have two stacking glass pieces supported by a black metal frame, with the lower glass piece a reservoir for oil. Discovery Channel Stores and Nature Co. stores sold the lamps from September 1999 through last month for between $18 and $24. Consumers are advised to stop using the lamps and return them to any Discovery Channel or Nature Co. store for a refund. For more information, they can call The Discovery Channel Store toll-free at 800-752- 1937 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or visit the company's Web site at shopping.discovery.com.
