Bathroom Splash Guard

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am looking for ways to create a splash guard around both a tub and sink. The idea of tile doesn't appeal to the rest of the family---mirrors were voted out too. Any novel ideas to treat the drywall or unusual materials to practically keep the splash damage down? Right now I am thinking paint and then a polyurethane spray for a few coats. Any better ideas?

I'll be taking down old wallpaper (we don't want wallpaper again) and painting.

The former residents of this house tried a piece of the vinyl flooring around the sink. It looked nice, but is now beginning to peel up. I would like to find a way to glue it down and fasten the edges better. Whatever you do for the tub, make sure it's mold resistant. Some people have used glossy paint for easier clean-up, but I don't know how waterproof it is.

Honestly vinyl flooring doesn't seem to meet our aesthetic needs...too much like tile. You are right about mold, but our real problem was that the splashes damaged the wallpaper coloring. They never grew mold.

anne,

i once wraped a tub and a free standing sink with 6" plywood splashes coverd in formica glued them to the walls with caulking and it looked extra nice. the man instaled his own tub and really scrached the walls up bad, the splashes looked so good they wanted the sink done to match.

I vote for Pauls answer. Formica! We not only back splashed our sinks but also use formica on our window sills, no more painting, just a wiping every week, and its bright and shiny! Vicki

What about a mozaic (sp?) lots of tile/crokery chips (maybe a few bits of mirror) pressed on plaster in a pattern or random then sealed with poly spray - you can edge mirrors the same as well and create a real theme - very trendy at the mo. A plant pot warehouse or tile factory is a good place to get different colour ceramic chips as they always have breakages.

I have glued Formica with no wood backing to the drywall. I used it as a chair rail to keep the wall clean and it worked fine. Tried a few different adhesives and found that caulk v troweled on worked best. Use a paintable caulk close the color of wall. For bathrooms or kitchens gloss or semi gloss paint will clean up good. Easy and fast. Bernice get a taller toilet.

lol, Bernice. I declare my hall bath smells to high heaven, no matter how I disinfect it. Son seems to not be able to learn how to aim. Any possible solutions other than installing a humungous urinal?

Dear daffy - jokingly tell your son one day that you read that the major cause of toilet missed hits is too small of a "gun"! ;)

Anne: We once finished a tub surround with 6" wide oak boards coated with several layers of polyurethane. Came out real nice. Had to cover some real bad wall board around an old tub.
