Are chickens afraid of fake owls?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My chickens free range and like to congregate on the back porch. Would one of those fake plastic owls keep them out of the back yard? Anyone tried this? Other ideas appreciated, but we can't afford to fence them out right now. Thanks,

Elizabeth

I have never tried it, but in town they done this to keep pigeons away and it worked for a while until the pigeons got use to it. So I would think chickens would probably do the same thing.

Mine were afraid of a little blue measuring cup. Who knew?

No experience, but I've heard that you have to move scary objects around now and again, or whatever you're trying to scare off gets used to it.

Mine are scared of anything large flying overhead, like a hawk, buzzard, or lowflying plane. Maybe one of those wind-sock thingys would work
