Question about Surge Milkers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

For those of you who use the Surge belly milkers... Do you hang them on the cow as they were designed or do you do something else with them? If you do something else, what do you do and how did you alter it? If you hang it on the cow, how did that go? Thanks, Tana

I am using mine on goats :)

So I took everything off (saved it .. one never knows .. someday I might get a cow) and just use the stainless steel container.

So I look forward to reading the responses you get. Thanks for asking!

I grew up using surge milkers. It would be hard to use them without hanging them on the belts, as that's what they were designed for. For milking on the floor, I think they're easier to use than the milkers that go directly to the can or tank. You also know how much milk each cow is giving.

I grew up using Surge Milkers also. It seems we had a wide leather strap that went over the cows back hips. On the underside, was a metal hook that help the milk can in place. It was almost like a horse saddle girth, only opposite. We did have some older Surge milkers that stood on the ground beside the cow, and was not hung on the strap. My dad only used those on the cows that kicked at the other milkers. I have one of each kind I keep as a reminder of my growing years.

yes you can use the strap like she said but for a goat a human belt would work also or usally people use those now adays for fresh cow bucket they take everything off the top buy a regular pipline milker and put the hose from milker to can and a hose from vacum to the can you have to have the lid modified to do this by welding shut all the holes on lid and welding on to pipes for your 2 hose to hook to

I once worked at a car wash that lots of salesfolk went thru. They'd give us caps or t-shirts to wear to work as advertizment.

One day the guy in the orange Surge milking machines car came thru and handed me a cap. Without thinking, I said - I'd rather have a t- shirt!. We both turned a pretty shade of red!
