Words from Paul Harvey

Paul Harvey Writes:

We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better. I'd really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches, I really would. I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in, I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him.

When you want to see a movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. On rainy days when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen riding with someone as uncool as your Mom. If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books. When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head. I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like. May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole. I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend. I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle.

May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand. These things I wish for you - tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life. Written with a pen. Sealed with a kiss. I'm here for you. And if I die before you do, I'll go to heaven and wait for you. >

Did you know Paul Harvey is the highest paid broadcaster - significantly more than even the biggies such as Dan Rather? Part comes from his daily programs, but most comes from receiving BIG bucks to speak at conventions and elsewhere.

Ken, is there something wrong with that?

Rick#7, I think this is so true!! It really is the only way to appreciate life! Thanks for sharing it with us.

I agree with daffodylady; quality breeds demand. Mr. Harvey has been around a LONG time in the broadcasting field; I hope he continues his lectures and career.

Ken: I thought Rush Limbaugh was the highest paid commentator. I stand corrected. Anyway, they are both good people and well worth the attention, in my honest opinion. No affronts to those who feel otherwise.

GREAT POST!!!!!

By the way, my first thought, in light of a good many other posts Ken has answered, was that he is something like a wet blanket. My second thought is that Ken helps us take off our rose-colored glasses and look at things from another perspective. Personally, I don't care how much Paul Harvey makes. He has been like a member of the family for decades. I like him. But Ken also makes me think of the other side of things, and although I don't always agree with him, I appreciate that. I like people who make me think; who force me to make sure I know what I'm doing and why.

I didn't think Ken was disparaging Paul Harvey for making a lot of money. I interpreted it as saying that a man with such old fashioned, down to earth values can still be immensely popular with the American public. Rather refreshing for us stick in the mud types that agree with what Paul Harvey has to say.

Earlier this summer Rush Limbaugh stunned Broadcasting Row with a record-breaking contract valued north of $250 million -- pacing Limbaugh ahead of the annual salaries for Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw and Barbara Walters -- combined!

Rick#7, Paul Harvey has been a favorite commentator of mine for many years. He speaks most eloquently of challenges that ordinary people strive to overcome. His words inspire others to rise above their circumstances and be the best that they can be. Such is the piece from Paul Harvey you shared with us. In this throw-away society we now live in, when everyone is wondering why our children are killing each other, the answer is in Harvey's words to his grandchildren. We as parents and grandparents must offer our children real feelings, life's trials and tribulations, joys and sorrows. These are the things that money will never buy. Paul Harvey has is right. As for Rush, since he has signed for all those mega bucks, he has also gotten the big head. I've stopped listening to his show, because he is so full of himself. We have just gotten the Fox Network here on cable and I've become a Bill O'Reilly fan. He's a stright talker and no spin. Gotta love that.
