Karen, it depends on how good your land is, and how you intend to keep it. In England, the plots of land are so small that some people keep them in a small pen in their back yard on concrete, feeding them hay and concentrates. That isnt too different from the large dairy model, actually. But it is hard on the cow to live on concrete.

If you want to put her on pasture, you should have at least a good acre of very good pasture. If your pasture is not very good, it may take 5 or more acres.
