need horse poems, quick!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I need some poems about horses for my newsletter. Nothing sappy. I actually prefer old poems by well-known authors, but will gladly read others. This poem will run alongside the obituary for the mare we lost in June, so I need something dignified, not weepy. Thanks.

There's probably something in 'The Black Riders' by Stephen Crane

Try a google search - I searched on "horse poem". Comes up with many many. There's a horse memorial poem on the first page, but you could spend a while looking through at least several pages.

Up and down and back and forth, horses' tails go switching.

Back and forth and round and round, horses' sides go twitching.

Horses do a lot of work to keep themselves from itching.

Yeah, you got it; sappy.

My mother taught me this poem when I was a tiny girl. Not true of course white feet being softer than black is an old wive's tale.

One white foot- buy a horse; Two white feet- try a horse; Three white feet- deny a horse; Four white feet and a white nose take off his hide and throw it to the crows.

The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man. - Winston Churchill

Look over the struggle for freedom Trace your present day strength to its source You'll find that a man's pathway to glory Is strewn with the bones of a horse. --Anonymous
