Auctions don't seem to be too pricy to me. If you don't have a general store around then you might be S.O.L. since you don't have a credit card...unless you get one.

I would think that you could substitute a ceramic bowl or other in place of a "crock". Also, there are plenty of recipes that don't call for a crock at all. Straight from vine into jars. The only reason you'll need a crock is for the long method for dill pickles.

large gallon jars,,,, you can use a metal deep pot,,as long as you dont need it soon,,I sometimes use my water bath pot. Just make sure there arent any cracks, chips, ect in it.

oh yea,, food grade plastic buckets work fine also

Local Ace Hardwares sometimes have them, but they're expensive. Most people I know use white plastic food-grade buckets. They cost a couple dollars or so, as opposed to $35-50 for a crock, unless you recycle a food service one, in which case they are free to cheap. They also don't break if you drop them.

Fred, If you really want a crock they have them in the LeHman's catalog.

Fred, when I lived in Sevierville, Tn., there's an old hardware store called Cash Hardware that had lots of them upstairs of the store. Don't recall the price, but don't think it was much. Don't know if they ship, but might be worth a call. Here's the # 1-865-453-2991.

Fred, On the Martha Stewart program, she used a gallon jar that looks like a cookie jar. I have that exact gallon jar at Walmarts for $13.00.

Fred, e-bay will take PayPal payments, which you can set up using cash.

Also, Lehman's carries them, and they take checks.
