Home built tractor plans

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I saw somewhere on the web that some magazine had plans for a home built tractor. Does anyone out there know where, and how I could get these plans? Any info would help. Thanks.

Was this a real tractor with wheels and an engine, or something that many call a "chicken tractor"? There are plans for the so-called chicken tractor. It is a little a-frame cage with no floor that you put a hen or two in and move it down between rows in the garden every day. Never seen plans for a real tractor.

Phil, there is a site for such listed in the old answers, farm equipment, build your own tractor thread.

Many years ago I built one using a manual trans and rear end from a Datson 610 station wagon, the rear end was narrowed by cutting and welding housing and axel shaft, trans was fitted to the rear with just a u joint between. Clutch was created by cable linked to a pivoting plate where the engine was mounted (to slack the v belt) just above the trans. Engine was an 8 hp Wisconson, steering was from a mid 60,s Ford van, narrowed. The three point was powered by a 12 volt electric pump from a truck lift gate. It was ugly and crude but gorilla strong; no charging system so you had to charge the battery to use the lift. It can be done...

A guy up the road has a homemade tractor. He used the frame and engine from a 3/4 ton chevy truck, a short driveshaft from the automatic tranny coupled to another 4 speed truck tranny direct to the stationary truck differential. Of course he shortened the truck frame considerably. Hes got a very short box behind the drivers seat that's filled with sand for extra weight for traction. It works really good, lotsa power. The second tranny is the key because it gives you a really low, low range.

I remember there were plans for a home built tractor in Countryside Magazine Several years ago. Maybe if you contact the publisher , Mr Belanger can help you. Big George

Check out www.cadplans.com They list a plan for a 4wd tractor they call the CADtrac, also have CADdigger and CADloader plans for about $150-200. They have a link to a site called www.metkit.com that has kits for sale to go with the plans. I checked it out and the tractor kit is about $6600, which seems kindof high. I would rather buy a good Ferguson 35 or 40 for half of that. Good luck!

Call 1-800-678-4883. Ask for the homebuilt tractor plans. $15 plus $2.75 s&h. Worth the money. Even if you don't build this tractor, you will get a load of ideas.
