greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi , I just got a 1 horse open sleigh at auction ! I always wanted one , now comes the hard part .It's over all in pretty good shape .It needs 2 pieces of wood replaced and paint and the metal need cleaned and painted , and new seats and top .Have any of you done this ? Any sites with sleigh info on it ? I guess I should use oil based paint ?

Patty,

What info. do you actually need? How to replaced the wood? How to recover? etc. If the sleigh is all ready painted theres probably is a good chance its oil based paint. To get a good job you are going to have to sand all painted wood surfaces then prime with a oil based primer then top coat with exterior oil based paint. I would say use latex,(because of ease of use, clean up and smell)but I know that on a sleigh it would not hold up as good or as long as oil.

Thanks .I think I am going to let one of the Amish craftsman redo it for me .Then I will put a new top on it and the cushions. They do such great work at such great prices. They will also do much better than me .Does anyone have any idea where to look for a makers mark ?
