Remedy for headlice

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Thought I'd start a new thread on this. Heres a remedy i got off another e-mail list. Good Luck!

Hello, I have been reading the thread on Fly repelling shampoos, and thought I would share a recipe with you. This recipe is NOT specifically for fly repelling, BUT, it IS excellent for Killing Lice and their eggs in Human Children, and on all pets, including cats. All arachnid species die from the contact. It also will repel termites and fire ants, and will kill them on contact as well. Since the above facts are correct, then it stands to reason that Flies will dislike the smell too. I haven't tried it for that, but we have no Fly problem here at all. Here is the recipe and instructions for use as a lice shampoo for little children: (change it as you will to read Goats or other animals): a.. Ingredients: b.. One Regular sized bottle of any Tearless baby shampoo c.. One 2 ounce bottle of REAL oil of Lavender. d.. Instructions: e.. Pour out enough shampoo from the bottle to make room for the Lavender oil. Pour into the remainder of the shampoo bottle, all the contents of the bottle of the Lavender oil. Shake. The mixture will turn white when it is ready. f.. Use: g.. Have the lice ridden child standing in the shower, bathed and shampooed with regular shampoo. Shampoo the child's hair with a palm ful of the Lice shampoo. Pile her hair on top and out of her eyes, then tell her to stand there for a full 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, rinse her hair. There will be a ring of dead lice around her. Repeat once more, then rinse. h.. For large animals, you would simply increase the ratio. If you have a large bottle of shampoo concentrate, then check the ounces in it, by the amount of ounces in a normal bottle of baby shampoo and increase the ounces of Oil of Lavender exponentially to add to IT for use with horses, goats, etc. The Shampoo also has antibiotic properties, and is good for scalp problems, dandruff, etc., but not recommended for every day, it is strong smelling, and you will smell like a Sunday Church pew full of old ladies if you do! :) Alva P.S. unlike the store bought kind of lice killing poisonous stuff, this does NOT need to be repeated to kill the eggs that hatch. There will be zero eggs to hatch since it kills the eggs as well if left on for the full 5 minutes. I pour on the mixture in any termite holes I find in the wood of my house, and on any fire ant hills. They cannot STAND the smell and run like crazy when I do that and never ever come back! Be sure to purchase an extra couple of bottles of Oil of Lavender, one to add a teaspoonful to the laundry, because you are going to have to wash ALL of your bedding if your child brought home lice from school, and the other to pour into a spritzer bottle full of water to spritz all of your stuffed furniture to kill any lice or eggs that may have fallen there. This same spritzer could be used to spray the walls of stalls, etc. In the case of use on animals. 1 bottle of Lavender oil to 1 Gallon of water, Shake before pouring into the spritzer bottle, and shake periodically while spritzing. This mixture is safe for use by those with Porphyria. Please do NOT use Shampoo as a pour on lice rid on Goats. The shampoo, even if it is natural, will burn the animal's skin. Cedar Oil, which is Thuja Occidentalis, may cause poisoning, and Vegetable oil will only serve to make a mess, and to cut the effectiveness of the Oil of Lavender. Remember. Only TRUE 100% pure Oil of Lavender will work. If it is not, or if it is diluted, it will NOT work in the recipe above. Alva

So .. any ideas on where to get pure, 100%, without a doubt REAL Oil of Lavender? Sounds like I need to keep some around the place, for sure! Thanks for the information on all the uses!

I would try places that sell to soap makers or herbal shops. On internet or back of CS. in ads.

Many health food stores carry essential oils. Won't be cheap, though!

you're right about most health food store prices. Does anyone know a good reasonable online source for essential oils and herbal extracts? I've found a few but none that carry an extensive selection with reasonable prices. Thanks for any suggestions.

My sister-in-law used mayonnaise. She put it all over her daughter's hair and then put plastic wrap over it, left it for 2 hours and rinsed.

Well tea tree oil seem to work well and you can get it at any herbal store usually. All you do is put 5 to 10 drops into your palm of your hand with shampoo and wash your hair do this twice for one day. Recommend in the morning and before bed. Good Luck-

Hi all!

Using plain old white vinegar and combing it through the hair gets rid of those "things" too!

Ranbow Meadow http://www.rainbowmeadow.com/ carries both lavender and tea tree essential oils. You will not do better on price. They are nice and helpfull people to deal with. I use them and have never been disappointed.

try www.sunrosearomatics.com

She has reasonably priced essential oils of excellent quality. It's a small business, so customer service is personalized. My oils last a long time. While some can be costly, you'll find they go a long way. Tea tree and lavender, which are both effective for ridding of headlice, aren't that expensive.

Here's a site that offers nontoxic lice treatments & a complete education on lice & other parasites, including a 22-page print-out: http://www.safe2use.com/

Our family & neighbors came down with scabies in May. The Scabies/No- See-Ums board on this site really helped us deal with it. Head lice are a real pain, too. Over-the-counter products like Rid & Nix may cause permanent damage especially if used repeatedly. Please, if anyone has head lice or scabies or some unidentified parasite, do some research first before using toxic treatments. Head lice can live in the environment for weeks & re-infection can become a constant hassle. Scabies is no fun, either, lemme tell ya.

Bernice, if you've actually used the oil of lavendar remedy for head lice & been successful, the Safe2Use site would love to know! They post the most effective nontoxic remedies they can find for parasites.

Another cheap link for essential oils: http://www.juicers.net/index.html

Here is the page for oil of lavendar, $4.75 for 1 oz., free shipping on orders over $20:
