Gluing Metal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Anyone have any experiences with using epoxy to glue two pieces of metal together?

In my case it would be two pieces of steel and there is not any weight-bearing issues to speak of.

Any particular issues of prepping the metal?

Thanks for any information.

Is there any particular reason you want to use epoxy? Metal expands and contracts with temperature... I'm not sure this will work so well with epoxy as a bond.

Most contact cements work on metal for ridged materials.

Will a product called JB Weld work for you? It is available in auto parts stores.

The best adhesive I have found for non-porous surfaces I got from the local paint and panel shop. It is a neoprene compound used in the auto industry, very similar to what is used to bond windscreens into modern vehicles.

JBWELD but if there's any chance of all of flexing, extreme temperature changes, weight or and other stressing, take it to a welding shop if you don't have the equipment. It shouldn't cost more than a few dollars if you just need a few spot welds.
