Millions in darkness in Nigeria

TENS of millions of people in southeastern Nigeria are in darkness after an electricity tower collapsed, power is expected to stay off for at least two weeks. The collapse of the installation, known as Tower 97, just outside Abudu in Edo State, has cut off towns and villages in 13 of Nigeria's 36 states. Among those affected is the oil city of Port Harcourt and the towns of Onitsha, Enugu and Aba.

Homes, hospitals, schools and businesses have been affected, the collapse is the latest in a series of mishaps to hit the state run National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) which has suffered years of mismanagement and a crumbling infrastucture.

NEPA has an installed capacity to produce a constant 6,000 megawatts, but current output hovers between a recent low of 1,200 and the more constant 2,000 megawatts.
