California hydroelectric plant begins generating year ahead of schedule

By Associated Press, 5/30/2001 21:29

HEMET, Calif. (AP) A hydroelectric generating facility at a new reservoir began putting out power Wednesday, a year earlier than planned.

The facility at Diamond Valley Lake will provide power for 13,000 households initially and 40,000 households once the reservoir is full next year, officials said.

''This may just be a drop in the bucket for California, but we believe that every little bit counts, especially this summer,'' said Phillip J. Pace, chairman of the Metropolitan Water District board.

The facility is the first new hydroelectric generator in the state in six years, according to the California Energy Commission.
