Pitcher pump below 25' ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I just drove a shallow well with a point using 1 1/4 pipe. Unfortunatly I did not hit water until 35'. Does any one know of a pitcher pump that can pull from that depth using the 1 1/4 pipe? John Fuerst 5/29/01

No. You don't actually suck water out with a pump, you creat a partial vacuum and let the air pressure push the water up. There is only enough air presure to push water up a bit over 32' with a full vacuum and you won't do that with a hand pump.

For anything deeper, you need to put the pump in the well. Jet pumps are electric pumps that stay above ground, but pump water down to a venturi, so the effective pumping of the well water is at the bottom of the well.

You can get deep well hand pumps, but the commercial ones aren't cheap. Try Leahmens.com

Just because you didn't hit water till 35' doesn't mean the pump has to pull it up 35'. Chances are you will have a standing column of water in the well casing above the 35'. I've got a deep well, 180' deep, yet there is water in the casing at 20'. It due to the hydraulic pressure in the water table.

What you would need is a deep well pump. Basically there is a rod which connects to a lift pump cylinder at the bottom of a pipe with a one-way valve. Instead of lifting water, it pumps water. Really not all that expensive. Lehmans has them. This is explaned better in one of the older threads in the Water category.

John: I meant to ad that you can verify the standing water in the well pipe by simply putting a small weight on a string and gradually lower it into the well casing with a "bobbing" motion. When you hear the weight hit the water, pull it out and measure the distance the water is from the top of the pipe, subtract that number from the well depth and thats the water column.

Lots of good advice; I'll only add one thing: I've never seen a deep well piston pump which would fit down a 1 1/4 inch pipe.

I do know one way to "hand pump" water from that deep: put the largest diameter foot valve that will fit down the pipe (I'm guessing it would be a 3/4 inch, but I'm sure a 1/2 inch will fit). Hang the foot valve on pvc pipe, or even poly pipe, making sure the fittings of the pipe will also fit in the 1 1/4 inch pipe.

Now, if you lift the pipe (the one on which you've hung the foot valve) up and down, you'll get water coming out every time you lift.

It's not very efficient, but I doubt you're going to be pumping all that much water out anyway. At least you might find out how much the well will produce.

Good luck, JOJ
