Homesteading in Canada

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We recently immigrated from the U.S. to Canada. We now live in the extreme southeast corner of Ontario, about a half hour south of Ottawa. I really enjoy CountrySide magazine, but is there something similar geared toward life in Canada? We intend to buy a fixer-upper farmhouse on at least 20-25 acres of land within two years. I am specifically looking for information regarding Jersey cows, dual purpose chickens, hogs, and the types of feed they require which we could grow ourselves (and how to grow it). My goal is not to have to buy any feed from outside sources. I am currently looking for mail order chickens, either barred rock, Rhode Island Red, or other meat/brown egg chicken. Thanx:o)

Welcome to Canada. Here in Nova Scotia I buy a little magaZine called Rural Delivery. I believe it is available across the country but can't say for sure. The web address is countrymagazines.com I buy my copy at the local feed store. I like the classifieds because they are local, some good interesting articles, but not as much how-to info as Countryside. Good Luck!
