NYPostSTATE POLS NO-SHOWS FOR YANKS' DAY IN D.C.
By VINCENT MORRIS and DAVID SEIFMAN
May 4, 2001 -- Most of New York's congressional delegation will be AWOL this morning, when baseball-loving President Bush toasts the Yankees at the White House.
Only six of the state's 33 House and Senate members told The Post they would be saluting the World Series champs.
Perhaps Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-B'klyn.,Qns.) had the best reason for skipping the event.
"Congressman Weiner is a Mets fan," said spokeswoman Serena Torrey.
Even Rep. José Serrano, whose Bronx district includes the House that Ruth Built, said he had other meetings, but he hoped to postpone them.
"I owe the Yankees my respect," he said.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will be a no-show, while Sen. Chuck Schumer was a maybe.
Clinton spokesman Jim Kennedy said she'll be at a teacher's conference in Rochester, where Bill Clinton is receiving an award.
Schumer originally said he can't be at the White House but backtracked later and said he might skip his New York obligations.
Only Reps. Steve Israel (D-L.I.), Eliot Engel (D-Bronx), Pete King (R-L.I.), Michael McNulty (D-Albany), Tom Reynolds (R-Williamsville) and Jack Quinn (R-Buffalo) said they'd be attending.
Mayor Giuliani was determined to be there.
"I can't miss that," he said, adding that he likes baseball more than he does politics.
