I have a young goofy rir rooster. He's came into his own about 6-8 months ago. The problem is he has started crowing earlier and earlier. THis week he has started crowing a midnight, then 2, then 3, then 4 and he crows throughout the day, I mean all the time. He's fed good and has good shelter. Is he ready for the pot because during this time of year we TRY to sleep with the window open. Besides keeping the hens awake, he's waking up my DW and that's not good. Gary in AL

This happened to us a few years back. The young rooster was crowing all times of the day. We used to laugh at the rooster crowing at 3 pm. Thankfully he quickly got better.

My roosters crow around the clock. They're only quiet for a couple of hours during the night.

I think some roosters are like people...they just don't have a clue! I had a rooster last year that crowed at all hours. When ever there was any noise at night he would start in. It was funny, everytime he would start to crow he would wake up my neighbors roosters and they would start crowing. We don't get that hot here, so it's not a big deal closing the window in the summer time. Sounds like he might be heading for the pot.

Gary, You said this week he started to crow during the night. This past week the moon has been very bright here-my rooster goes off at 4AM when the moon is full and bright; that's when the moon shines on the chicken coop.(Because the weather is mild here year round my coop is roofed and sided only on two sides leaving wire on the other sides.) He also crows if the neighbor leaves the yard light on-we have close neighbors- or if people are moving around in the yard or street. Now if I could just get him to crow when the racoons are snooping around I'd be happy. Check to see if he is reacting to light or being distrubed by 'intruders' and is just letting the world know he is there to protect his harem. After you get used to the crowing you'll sleep through it most of the time-at least I do. betty

We have a goofy rooster too. He crows early( before 6am.) if he sees any light, so we just shut the windows. He crows all day I've counted him crowing in a row and he's done 23 times in a row. I keep hoping he'll get a sore throat LOL!!!! We plan on keeping him around for a couple more months, we're trying to get a couple hens to set. I don't know that you can stop him other than Decrowing him or sticking him in the stew pot. Good luck :o)

Gary, our roosters (some are RIRs as well) also go off starting around 4am and continue throughout the day until it is dark and nobody comes close to them. Any kind of activity close to them gets them going. You just learn to sleep through it sooner or later. But if it continues to bother you ... then he can be quite tasty in the pot.
