Cleaning our chimney?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have a wood cookstove that we use exclusively to heat the house and cook on all winter long. I want to be able to clean out the chimney liner ourselves since we are finding that the liner really needs to be cleaned out several times in the winter and the cost of having someone in is too expensive.

Is this worth doing ourselves and where would we get the supplies?

Thanks.

Brushes and flexible fiberglass rods sections are available from the Wooster Brush Company, most hardware stores carry of can get this brand.

I was given a book wrote by a mennonite woman, and in it is a Chimney Soot Remover. Mix 1 cup salt and 1 cup zinc oxide powder. Mix and sprinkle occasionally on a hot fire to keep the flue clean and smoke free. Simple Variation: Throw a handful of salt on a blazing hot fire to clean soot out from the chimney. Judy -

Could you post the title of that book? It sounds really interesting...

I have a ton of books written by Amish people, and they are always so full of good, accurate information!

Thanks -
