I'd like to learn more about the early brewing and distilling business in San Francisco. Any suggestions of good source material on this subject? Has someone made this their area of expertise?

Colin--The best way to learn where the Early Breing establishments began is to check out the various city directories. almost every area East of Twin Peaks had neighborhood breweries-- North Beach, Mission, Bayview, South of Market-- all had breweries from the early 1800s.
As for brewing processes-- that's another story.
