Solids Filter for Raw Water- Sand???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I was wondering if anyone has any experience, plans or ideas for a small sand filter to filter the solids out of raw water. I have read about these things but have never found specifics. I am a single person using a rainwater catchment system and so really need only a small filter I think. Does the sand just filter out pine needles, leaves and such?? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks. Arlene in Oregon

what are you useing the water for? drinking?, there was a post not long ago,, about filtering river water. If you just want the larger particals out,, a simple cloth filter will work, you can let the water settle, ,particles will sink,, and you can use the upper portion.

If you are going to use the water for drinking, or cooking, it is going to take much more to make it safe. Even clear rainwater has a lot of potentionaly bad things in it.

Sorry, I was a bit unclear. I have read an article about people who run their rain water straight from the roof through this "sand filter" and then into a cistern and use it to drink. (Was it in this last Countryside issue?? I can"t remember) Myself having a degree in food saftey do have a problem with this idea of drinking unfiltered water and am planning on getting a gravity water purifier from Lehmans but it still has to be prefiltered. I guess I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with a sand filter. Thanks, Arlene
