Gary, I was going to buy a Dexter from an honest and reputable breeder who lived near me. She didn't milk her cows, so she couldn't tell me about the milking aspect of them. I called the regional director of my area. She couldn't tell me about milking a Dexter, but said she would check around and get back with me. It's been about two months and I haven't heard anything. I went with a jersey/holstein mix.

Most people say they will give 1-4 gallons a day, but I couldn't find anyone who was actully milking them. The meat is supposed to be out of this world.

I needed a cow that could give enough milk for my family. I would consider buying a Dexter later on, if I could be more sure of their milking ability. If you tell me what state you're in, I'd be happy to give you the number of the regional director for that area. Maybe you'll have better luck that I did.

We are also thinking of getting Irish Dexter cows. They give one and a half to two and a half gallons per day of milk. You can get more information on the web site www.dextercattle.org

I've heard the Dexter gives 3-5 gallons/day. Know your bloodlines when you buy.

The one and a half to two and a half gallons per day I quoted came from the Dexter Cattle Registry Website.

Thanks to everyone who got back to me about the Dexter Cattle. I have located a breeder here in Nova Scotia and will look into them a bit more. Thanks Again Gary
