Chemical analysis of seaweed for toxic metals

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Went to the beach this summer and collected sargasso seaweed for use on the garden. We need the trace minerals but are concerned about the mercury or maybe cadnium that might be in it. Does anyone know of any tests that have been done or where I can get it tested. I know some plants are used just for the purpose of removing heavy metals from water. We have it all stored in a tank until we find out something.

Call both your County Health Department and your County Sewage Disposal Department. They may know of a commercial lab who can test a sample for heavy metals for you. You might also send a sample of your garden soil as heavy metals can exist in soils naturally.

Let us know what you find out.
