re-use B4 recycle?!?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : UK Environment : One Thread

when at our local recycling centre there was a bin full of books, one was an encyclopedia so I went to take it so my kids could use it to help their school work. Result, one of the staff at the recycling centre gave me a bol****ing and accused me of theft. When I explained, he said that I was robbing from the council and I couldn't take it 'cos it MUST be pulped. Am I the only one who experiences this sort of stupidity?

That's plain silly. Recycling *unwanted* paper makes sense, but if there's a book that someone could use, I think it is a far better idea to pull it out of the recycling bin than let it go to waste.
