Nutritional Yeast?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Has any one used nutritional yeast/Red star with B12. I got some at our little amish store and my friend there said it can be added to bread and some foods for increased nutrition, and has a cheesey sort of flavor. any reviews or suggestions on what kind of baking/foods it does well in? I like to add all the nutrition I can to my baking for my little one without all the chemicals. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Grandma(adopted by me, but no blood relation) gave me a recipe that she said would cure just about all that ails you. It has nutritional yeast in it. It tastes REALLY bad though. I don't know what the yeast tastes like by itself. The recipe that Grandma uses is one that a doctor came up with for his own health when he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Don't know what kind, but here goes the recipe: 1 cup of wheat germ 1 cup of bran 1/2 cup of bone meal 1 cup of lecithen 1 cup of brewers yeast I think that is all. I will check back later and let you know. It has really given me an energy boost when I remember to choke it down. You're supposed to take 2 heaping Tbs mixed with orange juice or apple juice. Grandma is tougher than I am she takes it with water! Ugh.....just swallow it fast!

Cynthia, We use nutritional yeast on every thing, I keep it in a spice shaker and add it just like/instead of salt for many dishes esp. popcorn, start with a little add to taste, before or after cooking small amounts aren't as likely to change the flavor of the dish it is added to. My favorite brand is KAL.

Cynthia,

Nutritional yeast (or Brewers Yeast) is very high in vitamin B. I add it to lots of things but like thumper, popcorn is a favorite. I also really like it on hashbrowns. I buy it in bulk through a natural foods cooperative and it is less expensive than KAL or other varieties you can buy at the health food store.

We use it to make what we call "the spicy stuff" - don't use any particular recipe, but I blend approx. 10 parts nutr. yeast/half-part chile powder/one part cheese powder (if I have it)/half-part onion powder/ quarter-part garlic powder/ a bit of salt to taste = all together in the blender. We sprinkle 'the spicy stuff' on hot popcorn, on pita pieces before toasting in the oven - great way to get valuable nutrients in a snack! You can vary the ingredients for the flavor you prefer - onion/garlic/oregano/parmesan cheese for an italian flavor, for instance. I buy nutr.yeast in huge bags, and store it in gallon glass jars - it never seems to last long, with my two boys - they argue over who gets the leftovers in the bottom of the popcorn bowl!

Hi, we buy nutritional yeast in the bulk at the Natural Food Coop. I use it in all baked goods. You must use your regular yeast if you want your baked goods to rise though, because nutritional yeast is just added nutrition and taste.

I think Kal flakes taste the very best and one of my favorite ways to eat is to take a tespoon of dy flakes and a swig of pineapple juice and repeat as much as you need to. I guess you could mix the flakes IN the juice but I like the two distinct flavors. I have been known to eat more of this I should have and gotten what is pretty close to the "green apple splatters" so take it easy to start with.
