Very crowded. If you want to stay in the huts, you'll need to book ahead. First 2 weeks in August are very peak season.

I'm planning a trip this summer as well. Am hoping to head over in early July - is hoping to make the trek in mid-July tooearly? Also, what are some suggestions for packing...what can I leave behind because of the many huts, etc.

I am planning the walk early July with my partner John and 16 year old daughter Joanna. John did the walk 3years ago and is very eager for us to enjoy the experience. John says to allow yourself one spoil only in your ruck sac and goes as far as cutting bars of soap in half and has even talked of people cutting their toothbrush down! Even in July you need a warm fleece for the evenings. Getting my daughter to leave her platforms at home is going to be the problem Enjoy!!!

There are what look like some good resource books out there: Haute Route by Peter Cliff (Alpenbooks) has descriptions of six different routes, topo maps, etc.

I am considering going in May. Curious if I will be able to do so by foot. Also, any serious problems with going alone? Later in the year, there are sure to be people around in case of emergency but not sure about mid-May/early June.

Thanks, Jeff
