Unsafe bulletin boards

Beth,

having warned us all about the perils of the password storage under UBB, why don't you tell us what the software that's much worse is? I suspect from your description of it it's vBulletin, but why so coy?

It's not vBulletin.

I know a guy with some decent bboard software that he developed himself. Seems it's not getting much use these days. Anyway, if you want it all you have to do is date him for a year, make him buy you an over priced townhouse, break up with him for playing with himself in the bathtub, start your own trashy half-nudie web site, be real nice on the phone so he comes over and helps you with the programming then bitch at him relentlessly until he's finished and you're driving him home in your Volvo. You may have to throw a blow job or two in there - not sure, but I can ask.

Wow, cruudy, I never knew your life was so tough! Does he at least send you site traffic now?

Mmkay, Beth, time to get on the stick with this. The mentioned vodkatea bb is, well, not conducive to extended topics (Jen Wade and Trenchcoat notwithstanding), and as for 3WA . . .well, it just ain't what it could have been.

I know you just laze around your house all day, with nothing to do but watch your housekeeper, so hop to it girl!

Just waiting for my host to install mySQL. We're up to request number three now.

Speaking of BBs in general, did you notice that this one doesn't require any new paragraph tags in html to make things close up pretty? Here, watch me in action. I'm just going to hit (return) (return) ....

And poof, there you have it - a new line.

I did it again!

Now I'm loopy. Carry on.

The problem is when people want a single spaced list, like this:

1. I went to the store. 2. Then I came home. 3. This is a very boring list.

I put a line break before each number, but those are going to display all on one line. It only understands double returns.

Beth,

Trust me, I know this stuff can be a pain. I offically stopped doing Retrogression six months ago and I still haven't transferred the domain to point at davidgrenier.com, which itself still has nothing on it. Hell, I'd been looking for a new host for like a year before I even stopped doing La Retro.

Anyway, I wanted to suggest Dreamhost, if you're current host doesn't pull through. Most of their packages come with a mySQL database (I'm working with mySQL and PHP on a new project and I love it).

Out of curiosity, is this something that Jeremy is building or is this something you folks are buying?

Why is it that so many of us folks keep deciding that we need a break from online writing, only to have that break list a few days before we start experiencing "web creep"?
