What happened with the Solar Candles?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Ok, so senility has set in! I can't find the thread where one of the gals had purchased solar candles from Home Depot and was going to report on how the performed. Must be part of another thread I'm just not looking at. Sorry! Just wondering if they worked, how long they stayed lit, how much light they provided, etc. Thanks! Jan

I hate to sound stupid, but what the heck are solar candles? In my way of thinking, if the sun is out to provide the energy, why would you need a candle?

Joe: They were described as looking like small Coleman lanterns, using the sun to power them up for emergency lighting, or lighting your walkways, etc. The person who posted got them at Home Depot, and was going to let us know how well they worked the next day. You would use them during the evening or where ever you needed additional light, I imagine. Jan

I did bookmark the site, http://www.intermatic.com/malibu/s6.htm for the company that made the solar lighting, but it doesn't say how long or how much light they produce. Jan

I do a lot of walking and I have seen the products in use. Candle is a good description for the tiny amount of light that they emmit.

The concept is great. A tiny solar panel charges a built-in battery during the day, and then lights a bulb at night to illuminate walkways.

My cousins made something similar several years ago. They took a large jar, lined it most of the way around with aluminum foil, and dumped in a bunch of little glow in the dark toys from cereal boxes or whatever. Take the lid off and leave it under a lamp or out in the sun, and you can put the lid back on and have a small light.

I am the one who bought one,It works but dosnt last long at night. the concept is great but the product need more work.It will light my bathroom [ no window]so I can see but not very well.Right now I have it in the garden and if I lose power I can go in the back and get it. There was another brand on the shelf that was 4 dollars more expensive and said it put out twice the light of regular ones and I might pick one up to see if it puts out more light[ can always use the light in the garden].

Thanks, Kathy. I wasn't going to invest in them if they didn't light well, and for several hours. Glad to have the advantage of your experience! Thanks, Jan
