I've heard that it is good for you too. From what I remember, isn't it a tablespoon twice a day. It is supposed to speed up your metabolism or something. I'm looking forward to seeing more posts here.

Read "Folk Medicine" and "Arthritis and Folk Medicine" by D.C. Jarvis. They're about apple cider vinegar and it's many many uses.

A short excerpt from the section on apple cider vinegar from the book "A -Z of Natural Remedies" Longmeadow Press (800-322-2000) A good overall natural remedy reference.

Apple cider vinegar: Vermonters placed a high degree of reliance on the regular intake of cider vinegar and honey in promoting long working lives, with many putting in a vigorous day's work on the farm when they were well into their seventies and eighties. The practice was to take a couple of teaspoonfuls of each in a glass of water, at least once a day. As well as a general tonic, it is used as an important supplement for pregnant women, and as an antidote for neuralgic pain, headaches and migraine, sinusitis, high blood pressure and arthritis.

Hi Bonnie, Keep in mind this is VET advice. Not DOCTOR advice. I give my horse 1/2 cup of cider vinegar every day to help with stones. This is more of a preventative application, as is true with most natural medicine. The theory is that it balances the PH in his stomach to prevent the formation of stones and helps to dissolve the real small ones. I would imagine it would do the same for us re: kidney stones, gall stones, etc. Just a thought....Monica.

This forum is great! I have a question and before I can ask you've all answered it already. I was just wondering about cider vinegar also. I just started taking 2 tsp. vinegar, 2 tsp. honey mixed in a cup of hot water. My problem is I always get a horrible stomach ache after. Oh also , I take this 3 times a day. Sounds like it needs to be cut down to once a day. May try that for a bit and see what happens. sherry

Thanks for starting this thread. It inspired me to dig out my booklet on apple cider, and I do believe that I'll try to start taking some daily. Raw, unfiltered and unpasturized apple cider vinegar is supposed to be the best.

This booklet says 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar and 1 tsp. honey in a glass of water for a daily tonic. It's supposed to be good for arthritis, asthma, maintaining bone mass, cancer prevention (antioxidant), cholesterol, colds, constiipation, muscle cramps, diabetes, diarrhea, dietary transition, depression, cataract prevention, fatigue, food poisoning, hiccups, gallstones/kidney stones, headache, heart/blood pressure, indigestion, muscle soreness, nasal congestion/sinuses, sore throat, ulcers, and yeast infections. And that's just internally. Many external uses as well. Of course, the vinegar on it's own won't do it all -- you have to eat right, get exercise, etc.

The booklet that I have is entitled: Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar by Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D. with Larry M. Johns. I got it at Whole Foods (a natural foods/natural health store in my area).

I just made a cup of hot water with 1 tsp. each vinegar and honey. It isn't too bad. I suspect heating the water makes it taste better. Thanks whoever (Stan?) who mentioned taking it as a "tea" -- good idea. I'm sure I like the hot drink better than a cold one.

My Mother worked as a "sitter" for a man birthed with arthritis. Bed Bound, he was, all his earth life. He yet ran a profitable business from his bed stead and despite his disability, he gained a profit, shall we say Prophet..By the way, he believed in the Apple Vinegar and honey routine. No, he did not live forever, but he lived a long time, despite his physical hinderance. Your Choice...

I've been taking apple cider vinegar for years. I cannot handle it with honey (I buy local - unrefined? honey for the rest of the family);it makes my allergies act up. I mix a shot with a cup of apple juice and drink once a day. All I can say is that I rarely get sick, when I do it is because I slacked up on taking it. Used as a preventative measure I think it's great. My husband does this also and doesn't get sick. My children refuse and usually have colds, sore throats and virus a few times a year.

I just got this recipie from a friend to pass along to another pregnant friend who is having severe morning sickness. Its supposed to help with nausea and tases alot like ginger ale.

1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1 ts ground ginger Mix well until ginger and honey is dissolved. Add 1 quart cold water. Pour into glass and add sparkling water to taste.

Haven't tried it yet but I thought it sounded good.

My mother also swears by her cider vinegar "cocktail" - 1 tsp in 8 oz of water daily.

However, I am prone to headaches and find that cider vinegar gives me a migraine. Just a word of caution.

I use vinegar for many household tasks, cleaning, deoderizing, etc. Just can't drink the stuff.

I've read so many good things about apple cider vinegar that I started it a couple of days ago. The first morning I had about 1 tsp in an 8-oz glass of cold filtered water. Pleasant, no particular effects, one way or the other. Next morning, I had slightly more vinegar in same amount of water, & directly after drinking it, I got a nasty stomach ache, that came & went throughout the entire day. By 9:00 p.m. that night, I had violent diarrhea, which lasted off & on til 3:00 a.m. I would normally assume this was food poisoning, but I ate absolutely nothing suspicious. That was last night. Today I'm weak & exhausted, but the diarrhea's all gone. I've eaten next to nothing (1 piece of dry toast, a baked potato, a mango, which probably wasn't wise), and have already had 3 large bowel movements! After last night, this is totally confusing, especially since I haven't eaten much today. Sorry to be so graphic, I just don't know what's going on here. Any ideas?

In answer to Margaret...I don't know the answer and I am not a health professional...but I know a friend who dewormed his dog with vinegar...could it be you had some form of parasite? mg

Margaret, I just did a search on apple cider vinegar and at health.com apple cider vinegar is recommended as a laxative. 1 teaspoon per day mixed with some honey and water is supposed to keep you regular. I guess in your case we can say it's definitely working! I don't know what other health benefits apple cider vinegar might have, but maybe this is the main reason the old timers took it to begin with?
