As I was preparing dinner tonight I turned on the super bowl pre-game show just to say that I had watched it and as they were introducing the players(murderers and not) I was aghast at the language that filled my television coming from the players all hyped up to play the game. I couldn't believe that they would put that on national television for little eyes to watch. All those little boys(and girls) watching to hear all those foul mouths talking about their fellow team mates. I was glad that I had put on a "muppet show" movie for my kids to watch. (did anyone watch the original muppet movies as a kid? , I just purchased a set of the original shows(the real kermit too!!)) Anyway, I felt better as I served a homemade dinner of oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits and vegetables and dip to my husband and children, and afterward listening to public radio. Just thought that I would vent after an unsettling evening. Hope no one else saw or hard the pregame show and I sure wish that I hadn't. Thanks for listening!! cara lewis cnllewi@email.com

Wow, now I'm really glad I didn't watch the superbowl. Gone with the Wind was on TNT. My daughter and I have enjoyed watching it most of the evening. She had never seen it before. It is my all time favorite movie! And no cussing either. Why can't tv be more like it used to be.

Hi Cara: Football is really a good game! To the person who has ever caught a pass over their shoulder or make a good clean tackle they know its almost like an art form. However the players are just people. Rich, violent, vulgar people who fame has made then full of themselves!!! All the garbage they call color comentary is really sick!! Kids really should never hold the players as role models because they are just playing a game. The best way to watch football is turn off the sound. I played when I was younger and I've never lost my love for the sport......Kirk

Actually, superbowl Sunday is becoming one of our favorite holidays:~} It's just Gary and me and his brother. We have a finger buffet, watch the game-I read last night while they watched and played pac man. They get together and watch football and other sports. It's nice that they can spend time together. Super bowl Sunday is a nice time for the three of us.

Cara, When we made the move to homestead the TV did not come with us. We made a choice for our family to not have one. I don't regret it at all. I have heard all of the arguments about how educational it is, how wonderful PBS is, how I'm depriving my kids (they are the only kids at school with no TV) etc. but in the end I am convinced that the negative outweighed the positive hands down! We spend more time together talking, doing homework, playing board games and are generally a closer family. I once read and excellent book called "A Reasonable Life" and getting rid of the TV was the authors first step to a simpler lifestyle. Kim

I too wish that the tv did not come with us but hubby wouldn't hear of it! My kids think that it a real treat to watch something and they don;t do it often. As for the cussing on the tv last night, these were not words you've read in the bible!! VULGAR!! I'm no saint but I don't say those words especially not with kids around. Also, I have nothing against football, I actually understand it which is saying alot! I just can't stand the fact that these professional players get away with what they do. I suppose they have been getting away with things all their lives(in high school, who would punish the varsity football captain? But the tuba player doesn't get off so easy!!) My brief role as a Superbowl spectator was reading the Superbowl Players' Rapsheets on an online newspaper. I guess letting these guys play football at least keeps them out of prison.

The rest of my day was spent planting trees and playing with horses. Life is for participating.

The whole thing with the Super Bowl and sports in general is just sickening. From the total emphasis on it in the schools (think how much tax dollars this costs) to listening to these whining, overpaid crybabies in the professional leagues, i say enough is enough. An ex sports fan.

Athletes make good role models only in so far as they do what they do well. Professional football players (or basketball, hockey, and so on) are playing a game at a very high level. It takes considerable skill and most times superb physical conditioning to play successfully at that level, most especially teams who make it to the championships of their respective sports (a la the Superbowl). If these are qualities that you would like to expose your children to in the hopes they'll emulate them then they make good role models.

So far as the personal lives of many professional athletes are concerned, their political opinions, their manner of speaking and so on they're no better and often times no worse than most folks. Some will be OK and some are downright repugnant - Mike Tyson comes to mind as well Dennis Rodman. Why should anyone care what their opinions on *anything* other than their respective sports are? What makes their opinion any better than mine? Nothing, they've just got more notoriety because they play a game well, not that they know their butts from their elbows about anything else.

The same can be said for movie actors, musicians and *any* other field. In their respective fields they may have qualities you'd like your kids to emulate but out of their respective fields they can be just as dumb as anyone else. Even Albert Einstein isn't exempt from that.

Use role models that show by example that a person should be the best they can be at any given thing they choose to do and anything that doesn't show that you can just leave behind.

Use role models that display the qualities and traits of character and behavior you'd like your childen to emulate. Be they ball players or grave diggers.

As a female that grew up in Green Bay,WI in the 50's and 60's, I have to say I have absolutely no respect for most Packers players. There are some exeptions,but very few. Their manners while being interviewed are disgusting and their attitude makes me ill.

As for the Super Bowl, I had no idea when it was or where it took place.
