Do any of you have a system for organizing your books?

Cindy, I knew this had to be your post!!! Miss organizer herself! You should tell us how to do it, ha ha! Personally, I try to organize my books by subject matter. Easier for me to find that way. Notice, I said try, I'm not the great organizer you are!!

I use the Dewey Decimal System, same as at the public library and card catalog on an old 286 with windows 3.0 cardfile loaded.

Wow Jay will you come organize my books?

My husband built a floor to ceiling book case in the living room. I simple place the book together by subject. As i read my magazines i make a quickie index with notes and place it inside the cover.

My husband has about a million NAtional Geographics and always looking for more. Got any?

Shau Marie,

I am still trying to get all mine done. Lynn and I are actually considering buying a used mobilhome or construction site office trailer to turn into a study/library for future expansion. DDS was the easiest way for me to catalog from my days as librarian in school.

Separated by catagory; also by hard and soft cover - then in alphabetical order by author's last name. I'm really good at taking books off the shelf - really lousy at putting them back on. It's one of those jobs I save for kids that need to make some money!! Still need more shelves

I have a tall bookcase in the kitchen with my cookbooks and frequently used "how to" books in it. In the livingroom we have a shelf with Bibles, and related study material. In the spare room I have a large shelf with crafting and sewing books, on the rest of the "how to books". In the bedroom we have a wall of shelves for others like my poetry collection, music appreciation and some of our lighter reading favorites. By the computer I have a big shelf with computer related books and a stack of the last stuff I have looked up for these forum questions. I think I have too many books, but can't seem to get rid of any.

I have my books broken down into one major subject per shelf (ie; gardening, health, etc.), but that's about it for now. Used to do it alphabetically, but ever since I had to move my office, I just haven't gotten back there yet, and since I plan to move it one more time (to either a LARGE outbuilding or a construction office trailer) I'll just wait a little while longer. At least my filing cabinet is in better order!

Three stacks: Read, Unread, and going (back) to Goodwill.

I use the cardboard box/frantic dig method. All my books are in boxes and I frequently frantically dig through them.

I have them "scattered" all over the house sort of by subject, but ask me for a specific title and I can go right to it! My system is all in my head! No way could I put it down in print.

Wow..I am humbled in the presence of such organization . I have over 2000 and while catagorizing started out as a good plan...they are now in the "wherever I can stick 'em" mode. Afraid that I'm doomed, too...Bookaholic Forever!
