Float bed for transplants-the garden greenhouse substitute

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I now have the plans for a float bed for growing transplants for the garden. It's 5 pages or so.If you want it, I can mail it to you.Email me with your address.

This is a really inexpensive substitute for a full fledged greenhouse.

I'm not sure that I know what a float bed is. Could you explain a little?

A float bed is used here to grow tobacco transplants in place of a greenhouse. It's like a big cold frame with a hoopcovering, and plastic liner. You irrigate it and heat it with a few light bulbs. The water helps with solar gain, and the light bulbs do the rest.

Thousands of frugal tobacco farmers can't be too wrong. One of our Farmers Mkt growers uses them for growing vegetable transplants.Which is where I learned of them.

Very inexpensive.Like $20-30.You can make them as big as you need or make multiple ones. The plans call for approx 9'X12',but I would make it more like half that wide to reach the middle more easily. That size would hold something like 24 trays of transplants, for example.
