Propane prices in your area

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am curious as to what propane prices are in different areas of the country this year. Last year we had a locked in price of 84.9 cents per gallon with our propane company here in NW Ohio. This year they locked in the price at 114.9 for anyone that would be buying at least 800 gallons. We don't use nearly that much, so just had to fill the tank at 161.9 cents per gallon.

Last week, in E. Central Illinois - $1.57.9/ gallon.

Last year we contracted for 1000 gals at $.69/ gallon, took us 14 months to use it all. I don't even want to think about how much we've used already this year!

-- Polly (tigger@moultrie.com), January 04, 2001.

I'm in south central Missouri. Last time I checked it was $1.59 per gallon and rising .10 per week. Since this was a couple of weeks ago there is no telling what it is by now. I'm doing as much as I can with my wood stove. Hoping not to buy any more of the expensive stuff till I absolutely have to.

-- Amanda in Mo (aseley@townsqr.com), January 04, 2001.

Had propane delivered here at the Lake of the Ozarks last week and it was $1.50 a gal.

-- Lee Jobe (sgrmtn@moaccess.com), January 04, 2001.

$1.07 when I filled my tank in July 00...now its about $1.60 here in North Alabama. We use propane to cook and we have a 4 brick heater .....but I've had the King wood stove going non-stop this year. We had a SUPER mild winter last year ,even for here, so Ive got mucho wood to burn. It's really been a money saver to use it.

-- Jason (AJAMA5@netscape.net), January 04, 2001.

I just had my 1000 gallon tank filled last week, the price was $1.19 per gallon - I live in southern Minnesota.

I remember two summers ago when I had it filled for around 50 cents per gallon. :-(

-- Jim Morris (prism@bevcomm.net), January 04, 2001.

Just called today to have our 500 gallon tank filled, and they said the current price here in NW OH is $1.41/gal. Too darn much! Just the first of Sept it was $.79

-- Joe (Threearrs@AOL.com), January 04, 2001.

I live in the foothills of NCarolina and i just paid 95 cents a gallon for it ! I was belly aching about that price i guess i will keep my mouth shut.

-- Sarah from NC (Caswell995@cs.com), January 04, 2001.

Here in Jax. Fl. we paid $1.20 per gallon because we have been long time friends with the owner. He charges other people $2.25 a gallon and people are buying like crazy according to the owner Raymond. We get it at his price and the rest is to cover expenses.

-- Sandy(FL.) (MANDARINHILLBILLYS@prodigy.net), January 04, 2001.

$1.53 per gallon, that was 2-3 weeks ago, in N.E. Tex

-- Carol in Tx (cwaldrop@peoplescom.net), January 04, 2001.

$1.45 a week ago in NW WI. We locked in at $1.05 by prepaying .10 for 1000 gal. but our renter paid the 1.45 last week. The locked-in price had to be signed up for by August. I thought the price was outrageous THEN.

-- Peg (wildwoodfarms@hushmail.com), January 04, 2001.

Here in SW TN 1.38 gal if over 200 gal if under 200 1.48 gal, unless you prepaid back in the summer then you can get it for 1.30 gal. $1.30 was the cheapest it has been since last winter. It sure would be nice to see .79 or even 1.00. God Bless.

-- tracy emily in TN (emilyfarms@tsixroads.com), January 04, 2001.

In Aug. we locked into 87 cents a gallon for over 800 gallon----off the truck without a contract the price on 1/01/01 was $2.40 a gallon. Sonda in Ks.

-- Sonda (sgbruce@birch.net), January 04, 2001.

Propane was 1.53 last week...kerosene!!! 2.59. Last year kerosene was 1.50 or so. I don't know how much propane was last year.

-- Doreen (animalwaitress@excite.com), January 05, 2001.

We filled our tank yesterday, 1/4/01 and it was $2.46 but even last spring it was $1.89 here in southern Oregon, we have to fill up every 3 weeks.

-- Hendo (OR) (redgate@echoweb.net), January 05, 2001.

$1.49 in SE Indiana.

-- Cindy (atilrthehony_1@yahoo.com), January 05, 2001.

1.49 for propane here in southern ohio, and I just had my fuel oil tank refilled for 1.29 a gallon. I have a wonderful wood heater installed in our central heat supply, but I'm alergic to the smoke. I guess if it keeps goin up I'll have to get used to it.

-- hillbilly (internethillbilly@hotmail.com), January 05, 2001.

We locked in at $1.04 last summer and pay monthly. We could have gotten it a little cheape if we'd paid lump sum, but figured this way was better for us. Our delivery man was out yesterday, 1-4-01, and he said that the regular price now for central MO was $1.42 if you were on a regular route and $1.52 if you called when you needed it.

There was a story on local news about a shortage and I asked him about it. He said they hadn't experienced one until the story came out. The next day, they had over 100 calls from people wanting them to come out immediately and top off tanks. He also told me the biggest problem to supply during December was the weather. They had trucks off the roads and places they just couldn't go because roads were bad.

We're having a mini-thaw right now-warmed into the upper 30s yesterday and didn't drop below freezing last night. Wonderful! That can continue for a good while longer but the forecast for next week is more snow. UGH!

Here in No. CA. it's $1.79 if your buying over 25 gal. The smaller quantities cost 1.99/gal. It jumped up .20 a gallon in the last two weeks. That's at our local store. We just use the small tanks since we only cook with it and occasionally use a Mr. Heater Head to warm our sewing shop. I hope to get a hot water heater on propane soon. We have a timer on it and that helps greatly. Our electricity is high and there is going to be a raise in that soon. PG&E is .11/kw baseline and .14/kw over baseline. The baseline is set way too low. That's running us over $200/mo. A bit off topic, sorry. I like to hear the price comparisons from around the country. Interesting! By the way, gasoline is down to $1.49/gal now. Blessings!

-- Nancy in CA (sonflower35@icqmail.com), January 05, 2001.

Jumped from a 1.19 to 1.39, and we have to buy 200 gallons at a time. Thought I would fall over when handed this last reciept.

-- Judy (allsmile@ctnet.net), January 05, 2001.

When I bought propane a few days ago, I paid 1.37, down from 1.44 last week, up from the 98 cents I could have signed an agreement for in July. You can bet your checken feathers that I'll be signing this July!

Last November .85

Last month 1.49

The next day it jumped 10 cents. The guy said yes it will go higher for as long as we have it. They are running low on supplies. None of the companies here (3 local) are accepting new customers. They can't keep up with what they have. The local paper quoted the owner of one company as saying people should be making emergency plans, like a relative you can live with if you run out of propane.

-- Mona in OK (jascamp@ipa.net), January 05, 2001.

I just heard about somebody here in NE Ohio who paid $2.18 for propane! That is just unreal! What in the world is going on?!

-- Dianne (willow@config.com), January 05, 2001.

We are paying at least 1.80 a gal. Last Thurs (before New Years) I checked the tanks because I realized the last delivery had been Nov 26. The 2 100gal tanks were down to 30%. I called the co. like I was supposed to and they said they were behind on deliveries. We had to wait until Tues, 1/2/01 for a delivery and were down to almost 10% when the guy came. We had to keep the heater on Low for 5 days.

We would get a little cheaper price per gal if we used more than 500 gal in a year. But, the cheaper price doesn't start until after the 500....so why spend more to save money? I'm going to look into getting a cheaper per gal. price by purchasing ahead of time as some others appear to be doing.

At the end of Jan. our 5 yr contract will come to an end. If this company can't offer a better price, we will probably be switching. Problem there is transfer fees and such. We've considered buying our own tanks. These belong to the company but they also come with a little more service because of it.

Terry, are you the Terry that emailed me about previously living in MD? If so, I tried to email you back but the address wouldn't work and I've been sidetracked since then. I really didn't try to ignore you. If you could send the correct address to my email, I'll try again. :)

-- Heather in MD (heathergorden@hotmail.com), January 05, 2001.

Heather, Yes, I am the same Terry that e-mailed you. Hope you try to reach me again - don't know what the problem could be.

-- Terry (aunt_tm@hotmail.com), January 06, 2001.

We filled our tank on 12/29/00 and paid $2.02 per gallon. Same time last year = .87, here in North Central Florida. Thank goodness we only use 300 to 400 gal. per winter (don't laugh) season. It does get down it the "teens" quite a bit.

-- K (wheate@earthlink.net), January 06, 2001.

Well! Time for the old hootster to contribute my 1 cents worth. I seem to recall that this old head told ya'll while back that propane would be $2. gal this winter. And winter 'ain't' over yet either! We will see $4. propane in some parts of the country before grass. I hate to be the deliver'r of bad news but then again--is it really that bad? We can't do much right now about the consumtion of l.p. maybe, but we most certainly can before another winter! Look for alternative fuels for heat that don't include fossil fuels. I filled up this week and paid .85 cents. Very few peple can buy wholesale. Cheer up--Life is GREAT!! Spring will be here before you know it! Matt. 24:44

Sorry forgot to add East Texas area

-- Deborah (theant00@yahoo.com), January 07, 2001.

Last week, $1.82/gallon. We're outside of Montgomery, AL about 20 miles or so. 2 weeks ago it was $1.56, and 3 weeks ago it was $1.40. Nobody seems to be able to tell me if we've topped out yet. : (

-- Kristin, in Central Alabama (positivekharma@aol.com), January 07, 2001.

Western Washington $1.59 last week 1.14 august

I pay $100.00 a month and get filled monthly. 250 gal tank. I pay it year around and come Nov of each year, the propane Co. and I settle it out. Keeps the sticker shock down and I never worry about doing without.

North Cental Florida last week. $2.26 Judith

-- Judith (JHaral2197@aol.com), January 07, 2001.

Here in NE Texas it was .79 last year, $1.30 a gallon the first week in Dec and today it is $1.65.

-- Jackie at Acorn Hill (jlynne@neato.com), January 07, 2001.

Wow! Do I appreciate the LP company we do business with! 88 cents a gallon here in nc/nw IL. Their motto is "built on honesty, integrity and service" and they do live up to it. Think I'll write them a note of appreciation! They have large storage tanks and stock up when the prices are lower and set a cap on the price for the season. They also do summer fills when the price is lower. We do heat with a woodstove as well but with an old farmhouse we need to supplement with the furnace.

-- Jean (schiszik@tbcnet.com), January 08, 2001.

$1.60 here in the country outside of Kansas, IL (yes I said Illinois). I am considering installation of a wood or corn burning stove or furnace. See www.cornburner.com Keep Warm!! Dan

-- Dan Krabel (dk@comwares.net), January 08, 2001.

I am amazed at the wide range of prices from 88 cents to over 2.00 here in Idaho the price is 1.50 a gallon in 500 gallon tanks and going up. good luck and keep warm any way you can.

-- Diane Brown in Idaho (oleoranch3@aol.com), January 08, 2001.

Thank God I pre-bought this past spring at .74 understand local deliveries here in East Central Minnesota are $1.19. Makes one wonder what to do this spring, for next heating season, Hoot scares the Hell out of me....but he's probably accurate.

-- Don Barth (djbarth@ecenet.com), January 08, 2001.

LP prices through my co-op are running about $1.58 / gal. I try not to run the furnace much. I have a Consolidated Dutchwest woodburning stove and boy does that get used! I love it!

You really can't beat sitting in front of it w/ a cup of coffee and looking at the snow outside on a large Blue Spruce tree w/ birds nearby.

Oh well, winter in Wisconsin!!!

-- Carole in Wisconsin (coverga@bminet.com), January 08, 2001.

Just gota stiff shock today.Propane was $1.58 a gallon.Last mpnth was 1.32 a gal.Wow,now i can see that that is just about the same all over the country.howard nh

Jan.10th the local price for the Batesville, Arkansas area is 1.94. No wonder we burn wood!

-- Artie Ann Karns (rokarns@arkansas.net), January 11, 2001.

We folks heating with natural gas are feeling the pinch too. My bill for October was $45, in November it jumped to $95. I thought that was bad until I got the December bill yesterday, it was $161! Last December I paid $55. I feel very bad for the people on fixed incomes who just can't afford the increases. Hurry spring! Sherri in IN

-- Sherri C (CeltiaSkye@aol.com), January 11, 2001.

I don't use it but its going for $1.77 in North Central WV. Stay warm.

-- Anne (HT@HM.com), January 11, 2001.

We live in Southern Vermont- gas man came today, and the rate was up from $1.25 a month ago to $1.37 . Thank the good Lord that we use wood for our main source of heat. We only needed 31 gallons. Because of our low usage, though, our rate will go up even more next time. Pre-pay would've gotten us gas at approx $1.21/gallon. What's the price of propane going for in Wyoming? What's the price of anything going for in Wyoming?!!! My husband has got a case of wanderlust and would love to move out there and start homesteading -thanks to Countryside! Oh joy. Love to hear some answers though. Keep warm!

Just had 137 gal delivered to "top it off" and the price was 2.11 a gallon here by Silverton, Oregon. A shock to see the bill. Furnace is highly efficent but can't perform miracles.

I see the price for "takeaway" w/ your own tank is 1.75 a gal down at the Farmer's Coop. I guess it costs 36 cents extra per gallon to deliver it . ;-)

Luckily we also have wood heat; but, prices of wood have also gone way up in past 3 months. Will be interesting finding semi-fair prices for a couple needed cords.....

-- John Thomas (johnpam@teleport.com), March 04, 2001.

hmmmmm, the word gouging comes to mind. As the anti trust laws fall by the wayside and the energy supplies become concentrated in fewer hands, we will be seeing more of the same. In my area, we used to have two suppliers of propane until one was bought out by the other which gives the remaining dealer a monopoly. What a surprise, the intallations greatly escalated in price, the purchase options decreased, and the price went through the roof. I'm wondering when people will wake up to the fact that in order for our economic system to work, there needs to be competition. Not unlike the big department stores who come in and squeeze out the little guys with cheap prices. Then after they have control of the market the prices rise. And why not, their duty is to the shareholders and that duty is to make money. If you are fortunate enough to have more than one supplier in your area, call around and get prices from each of them. It is unlawful for one supplier to fill a competitors tank but threaten to change suppliers next year if they wont meet the competition. Another idea is next time 'big oil George' comes up for reelection, perhaps we'll have an alternative.

I live in Morrow County Ohio and I paid $2.69 per gallon 01/15/01. The most I ever paid was around $1.28 per gallon. lucky I only needed a little more than half a tank (179 gal) since my bill was over $500.00. I usally spend $350.00 for the whole year.

-- Vince Neff (nefvi01@ca.com), March 07, 2001.

Vince, where is Morrow county? We live in Williams county and I hope our propane has not gone to that price as we are getting our tank filled this week - will propbably take about 300 gallons.

-- Terry - NW Ohio (aunt_tm@hotmail.com), March 07, 2001.

South central wisconsin prices are $1.50-1.60 right now. Filled up around Thanksgiving at 1.28 and padlocked my tank, but the driver has not been back since. america needs to increase domestic oil production by 10 percent in order to put OPEC on notice and bring prices down. The Clinton years were bad for the energy situation, they stood by while a whole new breed of gas guzzling vehicles rolled off the assembly line. Now were paying the price. If we drill domestically, look for propane steady around a buck next year.

April, 2000 $2.56 a gallon in Orlando Fl

-- ABC (delac@cfl.rr.com), April 09, 2001.

I only use propane for the dryer so we pay a premium for low useage, the last fill up was $3.00 per gallon. I'm so glad we heat entirely with wood, and have our own woodlot. It's a lot of work but it's worth it in the long run.

propane is to high in n. mich.so we put in a outside woodstove and boiler.so now piss on them .

-- alan kalitta (nannyweb@webtv.net), June 01, 2001.

In December 2000, propane prices in my area (Puget Sound, Washington) peaked at $2.29/gallon. When they filled up my 250 gallon tank I got a bill for $460.00. I about fell over. I told the local supplier (Suburban Propane) who has a monopoly on supply around here that if prices continued that high, I would not buy their fuel anymore and put in a wood stove. At prices like that, a woodstove would pay for itself in 2 years even with the cost of installation. Criminy.
