Surprise! Tax Cut Not Unpopular

Congressional Democrats are telling President-elect George Bush there is little public support for his proposed large tax cut. A recent poll suggests just the opposite.

According to the Associated Press:

A nationwide CBS News telephone poll of 1,048 adults conducted Dec. 14-16 found that 61 percent favor Bush's plan.

The president-elect's plan, as he outlined it in his campaign, calls for $1.3 trillion in tax cuts to be spread out over the next decade.

But since Congress votes on budgetary proposals over five-year intervals, the CBS News survey asked about only the $460 billion installment for the initial five years.

Of those responding, 42 percent said they believe Bush has enough support to get it through the closely divided Congress and 38 percent said there isn’t enough support on Capitol Hill.

Eighteen percent gave no response and 2 percent said Bush doesn't need public support to make tax cuts.

In a Los Angeles Times poll of 865 adults, 65 percent of respondents said Bush is going to have to compromise with Democrats if he wants to enact a tax cut.
