Did They Know ( Christmas Poem)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Did They Know,

On that night so long ago

When wisemen traveled, their gifts to bestow

To their King, Their homage pay

Our very first Christmas day

They surely knew, since they traveled so far

Exactly who was beneath that star

But do youu suppose they really knew

The wonderous gift they'd recieved from you?

Gifts of gold, frankincence, and myrrh

Oh! Precious gifts these surely were

Still, I can't help but wonder if they even had a clue

Of the priceless treasures found in you

And the shepherds, harkened by the angels that night

They wanted a king, a warrior to fight

To set them free from bondage on earth

To exact for them justice

Or perhaps give them worth.

I wonder, What did they see in you sleepy eyes?

Did they see your Diety, Or just a prize?

When they gazed upon your sweet little face,

Did their hearts quicken with amazing pace?

Could their sould feel the longing embrace

Of your infinate, endless, love and grace?

It's obvious they knew from whence You came.

The angel announced Your birth by name.

But they surely couldn't see, or really understand.

They beheld the face of God, in this Son Of Man.

{ MERRY CHRISTMAS YA'LL !}

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

You got it right Bonnie, "this son of man" it wasn't until 325 years later a vote was taken and he was made son of god.

JLS, where did you get that little piece of misinformation?!?

I like the poem, Bonnie. Thank you.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

What misinformation? The fact you disagree? The date? The promotion? The source? The source is from the history of the Roman Catholic Church, which if I am not mistaken all christian churches sprang from.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

JLS, I don't know much about the Roman Catholic Church. Maybe it took them that long to catch on. ( Some aren't there Yet) But according to all I have read about Christianity, It's all about Christ and following Him and being a part of His church. If you were a part of His church you'd know that He called Himself The Son of Man and The Son of God. It's really not that complicated. I could argue theology with you from now until the second comeing but Im not here to do that. I just wanted to share this with those who would enjoy and say Merry Christmas.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

Bonnie, you are correct about me not being part of the christian church. The white folks would not let my family attend their church when I was growing up. According to them we could go to the one on the reservation. Don't have any great desire to start now cause I seriously doubt I would want to be cooped up with those good offensive folks.

-- JLS in NW AZ (stalkingbull007@AOL.com), December 14, 2000.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

JLS, That's a real sad story. It's obvious the white folks at that church weren't a part of a Christ centered church. Apparently it was all about them and not about Him. Hope you don't let those self centered folks keep you out of church forever. Remember it's all about Him. Who among us has been persocuted more than Christ?

Thanks Bonnie, Have you heard the song: Mary, Did you know? It is written by Mark Lowry. He does a version of it and so does some female Christian singer. It is similar to your poem and gets me choked up everytime. Try Napster if you haven't heard it or request it on your local Christian Radio Station. Well worth the effort. Q.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

It was not meant to be sad! It is possibly one of the best things that ever happened to me as it opened my eyes to racism and especially the racism of the christian church. It led to a study of other people and their cultures plus a lifelong passion for reading and learning. Please don't give me that horsepuckey about it being your christian gods' way as that myth is not part of my belief structure. If you folks would clearly label your posts christian, then more of us that find them offensive could stay away. It may also come as a surprise, but there are religions other than jewish/christan.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

JLS, Let's please not bicker on our forum. I though we were all in agreement that if a post did not apply to us, we would simple click the back button. She did put Christmas in the heading, and that is the day Christ was born. We can tell that Bonnie loves the Lord by her poems, and she did not post this to hurt anyone. Thanks for the poem Bonnie, it's special to me too.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

JlS, My poem isn't about relgion. It was written about Jesus. Perhaps I should have put that on the post. Apparently He offends a lot of folks. What has He done to offend you?

-- Bonnie (josabo1@juno.com), December 15, 2000.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

The myths about jesus do not offend me, it's the followers.

-- JLS in NW AZ (stalkingbull007@AOL.com), December 15, 2000.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

JLS, I can't imagine what I've done to offend you. I don't even know you. For that matter you don't know me.If I have offended you by posting my poem for everyone to read, or by wishing you and others a merry Christmas; then I am sorry. I did not do this with malice, so as to offend you ,or anyone.I simply wanted to share; in love For Christ and love for others a little of what He has given to me. I posted this in a spirit of love and joy. Not as a means to attack those who don't believe in Him.

JLS I'd like to hear about the Native American beliefs. Fill us in if you would. Also about 90% of christmas celabration is based in Pagan rites and that can be confirmed in history. But so what enjoy and Merry Christmas

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

Bonnie, thank you for the truly lovely poem!

Son of Man,Son of God, Son of David-[just some of the titles of our Lord]

Whose origins are from of old-from everlasting-[mic.5:2]

The Lord himself shall give you a sign;behold the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,and shall call His name Emmanuel[God with us] [Is.7:14]

The seed of the woman,-descended from Abraham,Isaac, and Jacob,of the tribe of Judah[Lion of the Tribe of Judah]etc.etc.etc.

The Holy One who was not to see decay(corruption)[Ps.16]

The Lord the Holy One of Israel[Is.45]the LORD the King of Israel, and His redeemer the LORD of hosts;I am the first, and I am the last;and beside me there is NO GOD.[Compare Rev.]

Behold the man, behold your king, behold your God

Beside Him there is no saviour[Is.]Thou shalt call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins.

The Light of the world[the Light not only of Israel but also of the gentiles...all the earth]

The Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world...

Our returning King---King of Kings and Lord of Lords!!![Rev.] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:and the government shall be upon His shoulder:and His name shall be called Wonderful,Counsellor,The Everlasting Father,The Prince of Peace. [Is.9:6]For unto you is born this day ,in the city of David, a saviour:which is Christ the Lord.[Lk.]

The Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world...

He is so much more than the Son of Man.His word, the Bible,is Not by any stretch of the imagination and defintion mythology.Only those who have already presupposed such would come away with that idea. There is no better proved book in all the world. There is no one more historically verifiable than Jesus Christ.I have shared a mere sampling of verses about Him!There is so much more[though I'm sure some of you may feel like you must've just read half the Bible-lol]

Bonnie,I really loved your poem, and I can see your love for Jesus shining brightly thru those loving words!!Bless you!

In His Love,~~Tracy~~

PS. special note to JlS:I,too, think it terribly sad the way some who called themselves Christians acted towards you and others! His word tells us that he "has made of one blood all nations of men..."There are many other references I could site to show that God is not like those "Christians".He loves you and has shed His blood for you,but he will not force you to accept Him.However, there will come a time when every knee shall bow before Him[Isaiah45:23;Romans14:11];I pray it will be soon acknowledging Him as Saviour and Lord rather than later as Lord and Judge. I'm aware that I sound terribly arrogant to you; I pray you realize that I am not so.That I write this lovingly- faithful are the wounds of a friend.

PPS-If anyone would sincerely like to "talk",I wouldn't mind a private email.I don't have much computer time anymore so it might take me a bit to answer...

God Bless and Merry Christmas,~~Tracy~~

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

JLS, you see the problem with a lot of churchgoers is simply that, they're churchgoers. They're not Christians. Sad but a lot of people think that that's all you have to do is "join church" especially alot of older people in small towns. And not all Christians are at the same stage of the walk. Changing and understanding is a process and it takes time. But I can say with truth that there are many sincere Christians on this forum and I'm sure they would answer your questions and worries if you would only ask.

Bonnie, I hope we'll be seeing more of your poetry. Wouldn't it be nice to put a book together of you poetry, Hoot's stories and from others of talent?

-- Cindy (atilrthehony_1@yahoo.com), December 18, 2000.

Response to Did They Know ( Christmas)

Last time I checked Christmas was about Christ's birth and therefore a Christian holiday. Therefore this post was clearly marked. I honestly feel that JLS has a chip on his or her shoulder and wanted to start an argument. I also feel it is sad that someone hurt him or her so deeply that he or she feels he or she must lash out at others.

Bonnie, lovely poem. God bless all of those one this forum. Merry Christmas!
