Don't know if this is what you're looking for. I've never tried them. They don't exactly sound chemical free. They're out of Natural Beauty at home.

You asked for a recipe, Teri, so perhaps you are not interested in a commercial product. However, Aubrey make shampoo and other products from all natural ingredients. You can find them in health food stores (usually, but not always) or you can order online or get a catalog from them (and the catalog lists all the ingredients of each product). A lot of their most popular products are available in small "trial" size. A warning though, some of them have natural scent in them. You could ask the person taking your order for recommendations.

My wife has used a can of day old flat beer, then washed with a mixture of water and ivory dishwashing soap. Don't see why you couldn't substitute homemade soap with a drop of olive oil. For winter dandruff, I have used a capful of listerine mouthwash massaged into the scalp, then rinse (it tingles , but works better than commercial dandruff shampoo).

If you make your own soap there are some shampoo bar recipes. Some contain some unsaponified oil added toward the end of the process. Washing your hair with bar soap is easy. If you don't make soap, then find a mild bar soap you like, or try the liquid castille soaps (like Dr. Bronner's brand) and water them down a bit and use that. Then you know there are no alcohols, etc. added.

Grow soapwort! cut and dry then when needed boil dried herb in water. Used for sensitive skin, acne, damaged hair. Use on delicate lace and fabric. Heck wash dishes in it!
