engineering and connecting round timbers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I was wondering if anyone here has any knowledge about building with round logs. I am going to use them for the framing on a straw bale house, and this is the one area I can't find any info on.I would like to find ideas on the best way to make a good right angle connection and also where to find engineering data to satisfy bldg. inspector if I'm forced to-can only find load specs on dimensional lumber.

I'm not sure this will hlp, but I was flipping through a book in the bookstore that might help. It was called something about modular timber framing, and I think the author's name was Mitchell. It seemed to have a lot of info on integrating log construction with conventional, and his purpose was evidently to simplify building with logs. I may go back and buy it because it seemed useful. If you have trouble finding it let me know, by then I may have bought it.

I just had to say "Hi" as we share the same first name! Are you near a library or have the resources to purchase books. Here's one that will help. The Straw Bale House Steen, Steen and Bainbridge ISBNO-930031-71-7 Also, where are you located? Be sure to plan on a wide over-hang for weather protection, better yet, a porch/veranda all around. Good Luck. Maureen

Check the Backwoods home website, there are a few articles there that may help. Also try searching under cordwood as well... I found some info on logs there too.

Thank you for your answers. I have read all the straw bale books but they leave out alot of details on joining round timbers... I have not found anything at the library-books about log homes don't have what I'm looking for because you don't frame a log home. When I lived in New Mexico most people building used their own logs round for framing and I was not paying attention to how they made the joints. We tried to do a temp. building this way last summer and it was not so pretty...I am just looking for solid details.I will keep looking, thank you for the new suggestions.Hey Maureen;you wouldn't happen to be of Irish heritage, would you?(I'm in Ca.)
