New pasture

I have 5 arce hillside covered with some huge poplar trees and lots of under growth. I've started cleaning out the under groth need some advice on what kind of grass to plant. hopefully this will be goat or cow pasture. It will probly be about 40% shade when all the small trees are gone. Ilive in sw Va. south of roa. thanks , Tom

If this is to be a goat pasture, why not let the goats clear it for you? They are browsers who would preferr the brush to grass anyway.

Tom, Dee is correct, you don't want to put goats out onto improved pastures. Goats are browsers like deer, and when pastured like cattle you are just setting yourself up for parasites (worms and cocci). You will spend more money in wormers and feed additives if you graze the goats. Obviously the opposite can be said for cattle, they are grazers. Vicki

Goats will clean out the brush & under-growth. I have a neighbor who has 4 Texas Longhorns, every time I drive by his place the cows are knee deep in the blackberry brush, they really clean things up. Goats will strip the bark off the poplars too!
