Sprouter and yogurt maker

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a small yogurt maker (makes 5 individual cups) and have always sprouted in a quart jar. I'm wanting to make larger quantities of both without going all the way to a commercial size. Any ideas? I've seen sprouters that are about the size of a dinnerplate, but don't know if they are still available. Also, what would be a good type of seed to sprout for chickens this winter? Would like to get the maximum nutrition for my $ and give the growing kids a good supplement. Thanks for your input.

Melina-I have always sprouted in a gallon jar and have found it works great for our family. If that doesn't seem like a lot, then try a couple of jars. For jars, we usually get pickle jars from Costco. They run about $4 and the boys enjoy the contents before it's turned into a sprouter. We use nylon netting (the kind used in window screens, sold at hardware stores for a minimal price per yard) and a trusty rubber band.

For seeds, I like sunflowers. I buy a 50# bag (sold as birdseed) and sprout them. Have been doing them on old towels over old screens out in the shed - not sure what I'll do come winter! Can't very well hose 'em down in the basement!

For yogurt, I use whatever jars are available. Canning jars work well. After I put the yogurt in the jars, I set them on a heating pad in a cabinet. I usually leave them there 12 to 18 hours. Doesn't get a sour taste. I use canning jars for sprouting, too. I did get sprouting lids from a seed catalog. I have been thinking about a sprouter, though.

Thanks for your answers. I've decided to go to a gallon size jar for sprouting, and quart canners for the yogurt. Why spend money I don't have on more fancy gadgets?
