I thought I had more tools in my garden shed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I was looking in my tool shed at the tools I had and just couldn't believe how few it takes to work our place. We have 2 construction shovels, 2 hoes, 1 posthole digger, 1 rake, 1 grass broom, 1 turning fork, 2 long handle scratch cultivators, 1 fencepost driver and 12 posts for staking, 200 ft of hose, 3 sprinklers and 2 water cans. Lynn and I were just amazed at how little it takes to do a good sized garden. I was thinking about trying to fix the 2 tillers and old lawn tractor we got, but now I'm almost afraid to jinx it cause the last 2 years we've had the best looking garden in our neighborhood. Does anybody else "get by" like this?

I have a really bad habit of leaving my garden tools out so I couldn't tell you what exactly I have but I did get an ATV to make all the hard halling easier. (I have alot of hills and woods)

Hey there, Jay. Have about the exact same tools, plus one. A maddock (sp?). It's the tool I use the most and couldn't dig a hole in this old rocky, clay soil of mine without it. It's let me plant things where I never would have been able to. Plus it's great to "lever" out good sized rocks. Gonna have it bronzed when I get old. heehee

I like to have what I need, and if it isn't a one shot deal I'll go out and by the tool(s), but am fairly minimal on stuff myself - not a lot of "extra" tools laying around that never get used. I have 1 hoe, 1 construction shovel and 1 flat shovel, 1 hay fork, 1 spading fork, 2 rakes, a few small "garden" shovels, 2 watering cans, 150' of hose, 2 sprinklers (mounted on tripods made of fence posts so they sit about 4' up), 6 metal stakes, a wheelbarrow, and a bunch of scrap wood bean poles. I also have a 5 HP tiller with a cracked rod, and a lawn tractor (that I do use - I bag my clippings and use them as mulch). That's about all I use for the garden.

I have to update my list. traded a junk tiller for a used whellbarrow ( no more 5 gal bucket ) , banjo spade, flat shovel and ax. Also on the original, I forgot my 18 inch file. Now all I gotta do is put a new handle in the ax.

A little hint for keeping up with your work gloves. You know those little pencil bags we used in school in our 3 ring binders? I keep my well worn , well oiled leather work gloves in one by my tools. Zip it up and hang it by the ring hole on a nail, they're where you need em , no spiders or mice in em either.

Was gonna suggest tradin' the tiller and tractor for next tool, when needed, or just fix what you have left and sell it. Many thanks for the hint on the gloves--this has been a really bad year for scorpions...Pat
