Chowder buildin stuff. [1800's story]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Original receipe for the chowder held at Elm River, ILL. This was taken from the late 1800's.

2 beef cows, 14 cases of tomatoes, 14 cases of green beans, 8 cases of corn, 10# salt, 5# pepper, 10 cases of tomato juice, 100 # carrots, 800# taters, 200# onions, 500# cabbage, 60 paks of celery. [A case holds 24 cans of whatever-EACH CAN holds ONE GALLON]. Cut into small pieces and cook all day over a wood fire, stirring constantly. Will feed 200 to 300 people.

I've got the kettle and firewood if'n anybody else will kick in the grub-stuff. Makes a rite smart bunch of eatin-when the weather is cooler and all the flys and skeeters are dead. A big coffee pot settin by the woodfire whilst some of us hillbillys are pickin and grinnin under the barn roof. Matt. 24:44
