Program on Noah's Flood

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Did anyone else see this evening's program on Noah's Flood and the possibility the legand originated with the Mediterranean flooding the Black Sea as the result of a rise in sea levels as the result of one of the last ice ages. Made an incredible lot of sense. One question not addressed is it also may relate to Atlantis. Plato seems to be the only source of this legand, and it would have happened in his backyard, so to speak. Did the various elements of Atlantis flee up separate river vallies which fed the Black Sea when it was apparently about 400 feet shallower than it is now, spreading their culture as they went?

I didn't see the program on the Great Flood. I don't doubt that such a flood did happen. We find marine fossils in many areas of Kansas, and we are a long distance from great quantities of water.

I find the whole Atlantis subject interesting. I was kind of hoping that Edgar Cayce's dreams/visions/predictions would be right about the "Lost Continent of Atlantis" re-appearing, but it has not happened according to his timetable.

I did find an interesting web site recently that gives much information dealing with theories and facts. It is http://www.atlantisrising.com

Of particular interest are the stones etched with medical procedures, which were first found in the 1500s. Some of these stones depict medical procedures which are advanced for our current so called "modern medicine."

Anyone that does read the many topics presented should remember that these ideas and writings should be studied to determine fact or fiction.

Yes Ken, I watched it..another thing that I fownd interesting that the same story was fownd on clay tablets much older than the Bible. Doris in Idaho

is it going to be on again?

I know that a LOT of the native american tribes have flood stories in their folklore, as to a lot of other folktales from other parts of the world. Makes you wonder....

I believe the program was on The Learning Channel. Wish I had taped it now. For those who didn't see it, the basic premise is in about 5,500 BC there was a land bridge between Europe and Asia. It block the Mediterranean from getting into the Black Sea, which was some 400 feet lower in elevation. A mini-ice age raised the level of the Mediterrean to where the land bridge/blockage was breeched, resulted in a huge flow of water into the Black Sea, turning it from fresh to salt water. Using underwater sonar they can trace river bed from where they are today downward. All end at a certain level, at a depth of about 400 feet, as if they fed into a lake.

In the basin sediments under a layer of silt are fresh water clams. In and above it are salt water clams.

The story of Atlantis says it lied beyond the Straits of Hurcules. Many have taken this to be the Straits of Galbralter (spelling?). Hurcules was, I believe, Greek, so why would Straits at the other end of the Mediterrean be named for him? A likely site would have been between Europe and Asia as if his great strength held the Mediterrean back from flooding the Black Sea.

Would the people around the Black Sea then know about the impending danger. Surely they would know about the rise in the level of the Mediterrean and could possibly see the land bridge begin to collapse. Was this the warning Noah took note of and built a boat capable of holding his immediate family and two each of each of the livestock he owned. Lots of difference between going forth and gathering two each of each of the species of the world and, "Honey, we can't take them all, just pick out a ram and ewe." If Noah and his family were basically Caucasians and repopulated the world about 4,000 years ago, how do you account for Asians, Negroes, Aborigenies (my spelling if horrible today)in that short of time? Who did his children and grandchildren mate with to repopulate the world I guess incest is all right as long as your keep it in the family. Same with Adam and Eve, although there were those people of Nod.

If the waters covered all of the world, where did they come from and where did they go. Water covering all of a culture at once would be possible. They came, but didn't go away. Raining for 40 days and 40 nights. Water entering the Black Sea for 40 days and 40 nights?

If I remember the program correctly it said it is believe Genesis was written about 200BC and Noah's Flood, as recorded in the Bible, occurred in about 2,000BC. The clay tablets date back to about 5,500BC. At one time the peoples of this area conquered Israel and took slaves back home with them, to where the legend may have been passed on.

I saw a news item to where Bob Ballard, the guy who found the Titantic and Bismark, was planning to do underwater dives in the Black Sea hoping to find lost cities.

I find this a very intriquing item. It may conflict with the exact wording of the version of the Bible you have, but as a general premise it can fit.

Yes, many cultures have flood stories, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are the same flood. If you were living in what is today Florida about 5,500 years ago rising sea levels would have flooded much of it.

I didn't see the program, but the topic is interesting. Something that I ponder on: evidence has been found of batteries, electricity , brain surgery and other sciences in the great pyrimids, yet 2000 years later, give or take, modern man is just now discovering these. What do you think Ken?

Check to see if your local library can get you any of the books by or about Immanuel Velikovshy. He basically wrote about two subjects, periodic polar shifts and Venus may be a fairly recent addition to the Solar System, causing a number of castrophic events on Earth as a result. On polar shifts his theory is one pole becomes too heavy with ice and it causes the planet to shift sideways on its axis. One day you have a civilization living in the tropics and the next day at the new North Pole. Why are frozen Mastatons found with fresh forage in their stomachs? Some of what he says may also offer confirmation of Bibical events. He has followers, but read his works with an open mind.

The fresh greens in their stomachs would make you go "Hmmm".

Hi Ken, This makes the fifth time I've tried to post a response to some of your questions.4 times prior my computer either froze up or my power went out! Here goes...

The Bible clearly talks about the Flood as global in nature. In fact, the two words used to describe it in the Bible- Hebrew:mabbul,Greek:kataklusmos-are only used Biblically in relation to The Flood.

I believe you asked some critical questions in this regard, and I shall endeavor to present some info. by way of an answer.

Where did the water come from? The Bible tells about the Windows of heaven:the waters that were above the firmament.Imagine a vast vapor canopy circling the earth, protecting it from harmful radiation, blessing it with a universally warm climate.I believe there is much evidence for this:for instance tropical and subtropical plant fossils on the poles etc.(Why evolutionists believe those areas were even colder than now.)(Btw,this protective canopy,I believe,in part is why the antediluvians lived such a long time.)The Bible also talks of the Fountains of the great deep being broken up.(Evidently some vast underground reservoir which fed the springs+rivers.)Furthermore, there was no rain(Just what you'd expect from the vapor canopy);Rather the ground was watered by a mist.

Our current atmosphere only has enough water in it to provide appx. 2 inches of total if it all condensed at once.Obviously not enough to flood the earth.

Anyways,The topography of the earth was probably much different than today.Maybe gently rolling or some such thing. It was originally created very good-for man's care, use and enjoyment, after all. There is more than enough water in hte oceans today to cover the earth if they were raised but a bit.Interesting passage:Psalm 104:6-9.In it,the Psalmist speaks regarding the earth:"You covered it with the deep as with a garment:the waters stood above the mountains. At your rebuke they fled;at the voice of your thunder they hasted away. They go up by the mountains;they go down by the valleys unto the place you have founded for them. You have set a bound that they may not pass over;that they turn not again to cover the earth."[Note in my study Bible:The sense of this statement is:The mountains rise;the basins sink down. This postdiluvian mountain building epoch permitted the Flood waters to drain off into the new ocean basins.]

I think there is abundance of physical evidence for this worldwide Deluge. The fossil record for one! What an example-not of evolution contrary to the laws of science, rather,of suffering and death on a massive scale!Look at the Huge fossil graveyards. The preservation of exceedingly delicate structures(in example:skin imprints and tiny "hairs" on plants)speak of a rapid entombment and lithification. Look at the huge dinosaurs! One could never be fossilized by sediment settling out at a mere fraction of an inch per year! All you'd end up with was carrion. Then there are the polystrate fossils-fossils embedded THROUGH several "ages" of rock. The abscence of transitional forms in the record. The abscence of meteorites in the record...Etc. etc. etc.

Races of people:Happened after Babel, when the Lord confused their languages, the people subsequently moved off with others of the same tongue and eventually their unique genetical makeup produced the beautiful rainbow of skin colors that we see-from the fairest of the fair(I'm one of 'em)to the darkest ebony skinned maiden.

Btw,from Babel everyone carried the story of the Great Flood to their own culture:mythologized, yes, but still there.

In regards to who they married:Well,Noah's Grandkids married their cousins of course! There was no danger in such a union then being so close to the genetically perfect Adam and Eve.There was not time for the harmful and universal effects of increasing entropy to ruin their genes.[Incidentally,Cain and His brothers married their sisters of course. It was not yet forbidden-when it was so it was for our own good as all God's commands are:His commandments are not grievous.]

Oops, almost forgot this note:God brought the animals unto Noah;Noah brought them onto hte ark.[The ark was a huge vessel appx. 435ft.X 75ft.-a great big barge, perfectly designed for it's job!Btw,who would spend 120 yrs. building a boat of that size to escape a local flood.Personally,I'd just move!Nor can I imagine that God would be so capricious as to require that...]

Wow Ken!You raised some good questions.I pray I answered them ok! God bless you sir! ~~~Tracy~~~

I watched the program this weekend as well and found it very interesting. The name of the show was something like "The Unexplained" or something with the word Unexplained in it. I expect it will be repeated during this week.

I too, am fascinated by these kinds of programs and have also read alot about Atlantis. I have studied Edgar Cayce's work extensively and hope that his predictions about finding evidence of Atlantis will come to light in my lifetime. It is fascinating that there is the possibility that a superior race of people lived in our history. Really makes you wonder what happened and why did we lose that knowledge. It certainly should make us stop and think that maybe we aren't as advanced as we think we are. Based on the Cayce readings Atlantis was lost because of the attitudes/greed/powerhunger of the people of Atlantis. Guess we still haven't learned that lesson. I'd say we are just doomed to repeat it.

To Ken & Doris (in Idaho),

The clay tablets you mentioned were from the Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh. This story was recorded about 2700 BCE (BC) and was about a Babylonian warrior who was instructed by the gods to build a great boat to save his people from the rath of certain gods who were going to flood the earth. The boat was built in units of cubits, had six decks (seven levels) and nine compartments and was stocked with all sorts of animals, food, family members and relatives to ride out the storm. The story predates Genesis by many hundreds of years.

Coincidence? Just type "gilgamesh" on your browser and get the story for yourself. Fascinating history.
